One of the trends in technology is the advancement of the Internet of Things (IoT) applied to new industries. Innovative companies worldwide are looking for new tools that can help improve their services and customer experience.
Consequently, Location World, a company specialized in developing telematic technology and new business models for the automotive, security, logistics, and insurance industries, is scaling using Google Cloud.
With more than 200 employees and present in nine countries, such as Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Argentina, and Spain, the company aims to make a difference for its customers. The organization does not want to just track vehicles but also create useful sources of information for users.
Generating alarms and events for possible vehicle faults or errors in real time is as important as generating data to fully analyze events in a simple, user-friendly way to avoid future failures.
Fulfilling those business goals goes hand in hand with making decisions about infrastructure and innovation. That is why Location World decided to migrate to Google Cloud solutions and start a new chapter.
Faced with the need to scale and have more flexible tools to maintain resources, in 2016 the organization decided to first migrate the platform’s critical components, and then to complete the process with the migration of secondary components.
“Google Cloud has helped us overcome one of our challenges as a company: growing our infrastructure based on our customers’ demands.”
—Paul Calderon, Chief Cloud Officer, Location WorldFirst steps for the change
One of Location World’s challenges was improving the infrastructure without having to go through long processes. Being in the cloud allowed them to have more simple and faster tools, monitor the platform 24/7, and achieve 99.9% resource availability.
“One of the benefits of Google Cloud for us is how easy it is to build infrastructure without the need to generate tickets that can take days to resolve.”
—Pablo Salazar, Chief Engineering Officer, Location WorldThis translates into sustained business growth while maintaining a cost-benefit balance to run its solution, making it far more stable and scalable.
Location World has also been able to control all communication security by using Google Cloud’s networking products. Moreover, with the use of the Pub/Sub messaging broker, the company manages to distribute the information to the platform’s various components that are in Google Kubernetes Engine, Cloud Functions, or App Engine services.
The infrastructure can, therefore, be monitored by using Cloud Logging and Cloud Monitoring, leveraging the capabilities enabled by knowing the real-time status of the platform.
This also translates into increased availability of the resources without needing to adapt to maintenance schedules. Furthermore, it enables them to offer customers new options or features in a much more dynamic way.
Google Cloud allows the company to deploy components developed in several programming languages. Learning about these new languages to optimize every platform component is an interesting challenge for the developers.
A journey to continuous growth
The possibility of scaling resources up or down has been crucial for Location World’s growth. It has enabled the company to adjust to the on-demand operating needs of its assets and optimize costs.
This managed resource distribution and handling in services such as Google Kubernetes Engine also optimizes processing costs as every platform service or component only uses what it needs to operate.
The availability of customized dashboards is both a differentiator and the service Location World customers most demand. This requires the time-consuming effort of customizing the tools. However, thanks to Looker’s self-management capability, BI teams can work on the basic dashboard library easily. And even customers can self-manage the customization of their dashboards.
Google Cloud’s self-services free teams from performing operational maintenance or monitoring tasks so they can focus on software development and improvements. This can be translated into a 90% reduction in third-party support waiting time.
Google Cloud has helped Location World not only improve its team’s routine work but also its productivity.
“As the platform is easy and intuitive to use, we have managed to solve almost 80% of the cases ourselves. This means we have made huge strides in optimizing resources.”
—Paul Calderon, Chief Cloud Officer, Location WorldThinking about the future, a very important challenge for the Location World team is to align with Google Cloud technology breakthroughs to identify and improve the services it provides its customers and keep improving the platform’s security.
