Automated 70% of credit application processes
Banco ABC Brasil has been operating for over 33 years in the market and continues evolving to offer comprehensive solutions to companies and their stakeholders, serving their entire value chains. With a broad portfolio of products, agile decision-making, and expertise in credit analysis, the bank relies on tailoring its products to its customers' specific needs.
Investing in technology has therefore become business-critical, starting with the organization focusing on digital transformation and a data-driven culture. The bank decided to create an internal data team to support new strategies for innovation, marketing analytics, operating efficiency, agility and quality of internal data use, and generating new business opportunities with the aim of enhancing relationships and financial experiences with customers.
"We invested in a Data & Analytics team to foster a new era of data-driven decisions at our bank. As a result, we managed to support new ideas based on robust insights, aiming for higher customer satisfaction, and leveraging digital transformation, as well as developing financial solutions to serve our customers' entire value chain."
—Marco Mastroeni, VP of Products and Innovation, Banco ABC BrasilThese strategies were first applied to low-billing customers, and positive results were obtained. As the number of operations increased, it became clear that the decision-making process had to be improved and automated, accelerating new service models and supporting customers' diverse financial needs.
Enhancing management and analysis processes, for both financial data and information on customers' behavior, turned into a challenge. Through the use of artificial intelligence and machine-learning tools, the company also intended to gain a competitive edge over its competitors' offerings.
The team then began a process of choosing a provider to migrate its on-premises data platform to the public cloud. Google Cloud stood out as one of the top choices, especially for artificial intelligence technologies and business partnership terms.
"Our main reasons for choosing Google Cloud were the advantages of its analytical tools BigQuery and Vertex AI, its AutoML services to accelerate the development of AI-based models, and better resource utilization to deploy a business domain-oriented data platform and self-service analytics."
—Rafael Kataoka, Head of Data Office, Banco ABC BrasilNew data management opportunities
The migration to the cloud kicked off in April 2020, with the first project phase lasting four months. The bank relied on the support provided by IPNET Growth Partner, a Google Cloud partner, throughout the process: from architecture design to team support service proposals and including training on security best practices.
The data platform modernization was carefully planned to align with the company's expectations. Teams worked together to come up with a federated data governance solution, providing for total management over accounts, connections, security, and access per business area.
"We started this process with networking, authentication, and billing strategies. Later on, we created data layers in Cloud Storage and BigQuery to accommodate the on-premises solution's information through an integrated pipeline. Only then did the analytics and machine-learning initiatives begin."
—Thiago Soares, Customer Attraction Leader, IPNETThe migration opened up several data management opportunities for the company, such as the creation of a data-driven culture and the use of AI and data analytics products. Today, the bank's data platform is 100% cloud-based, and BigQuery and Looker Studio are among the most business-relevant tools.
"BigQuery is a scalable solution, with a high processing capacity, and it seamlessly integrates with several resources enabling data ingestion and processing, including Pub/Sub and Vertex AI, to support online data integration and also tools for insights generation and AI model deployment. Accessing data is also easy due to the use of programming languages such as SQL, R, or Python," Rafael Kataoka explains.
"Looker is another tool that gives us the possibility to achieve centralized, scalable, and user-friendly governance to democratize access to information and make tools available to business areas under a self-service BI model, whether for analysis, reporting, or KPI-related purposes," he adds.
In addition, solutions such as Dataproc and Cloud Run help the bank search for public data to feed the reports it generates. Cloud Storage serves as a solution to store unstructured data, such as audio and video resources for training NLP algorithms.
Clear results and certainty of evolution
Two years after the migration to Google Cloud, the opportunity to conduct audits regularly together with speed gains and user-friendly tools have really made a difference to the company's day-to-day activities.
Nearly half the organization's personnel now use and work with data, performing analyses in several internal processes. These new routines lead to faster time-to-ROI.
The platform has even made it possible to structure customer-focused information, based on historical data, to analyze consumption behavior. Customer experience has also been enhanced through decision-making, which is now data-driven and 40% faster.
"Deploying Google Cloud at Banco ABC brought a new future perspective. The challenge to grow is based on robust security and scalability, which has opened the doors to a seamless and secure transition to Open Banking. Digital transformation and the spread of a data-driven culture underpinned data-enabled empowerment," says Thiago Soares, Customer Attraction Leader at IPNET.
The generation of values with all-in-one management of corporate dashboards and KPIs, building 50% faster predictive models, and increasing the collection of financial and customer data by 60% are among other benefits attained. The delivery of digital financial services also improved: 70% of the credit application process has now been automated.
In terms of data intelligibility, the company intends to continue focusing on expansion. The IT team holds regular meetings to update departments and projects on the possibilities the public cloud can offer.
