After migrating to Google Cloud, the company cut costs, increased data processing speed and quality, and achieved agility for service delivery.

Google Cloud results

  • Storage costs cut by a third, thanks to Cloud SQL
  • Latency time for data requests reduced by 40%
  • Accuracy of optical character recognition increased by 15%

Data clustering time cut by 70%

Bringing together medical, financial, and data science experts, hygia saúde implemented a solution that offers a variety of healthcare services to individuals and companies, including preventive testing, monitoring, a benefit program, and medical record management services.

This startup, which describes itself as a fintech and a healthtech, is known for linking both those worlds, since one of its main services is a preventive-healthcare program for companies.

A milestone in hygia saúde’s quest to promote innovation and diversity in the workplace was its participation in Google for Startups Accelerator’s first class of 2021, which focused exclusively on women-led companies.

"More than 50% of our employees are female or LGBTQIAP+ and 36% hold leadership positions. We designed hygia saúde to be an organization that prioritizes diversity so we can better reach Brazilians from every level of society. Half our employees were hired through our diversity program," says Priscilla Miehe, hygia saúde’s Chief Data Officer.

Besides mentorships focusing on female leadership and diversity, Priscilla also had the chance to review technical aspects the startup needed to improve during the program. Changes were applied based on hygia saúde’s experience in Google for Startups Accelerator.

The cloud as a choice

Since it has always aimed for technology that was both secure and able to handle a large workload volume, the company was looking to operate in a way that consumers would find accessible and reliable. With those needs in mind and focusing on operational cost savings, it planned to start restructuring its architecture.

"Google for Startups Accelerator’s technical mentorships helped us to better train the professionals involved in this restructuring process. By exchanging ideas and interacting, we understood our needs and managed to modernize and migrate to Google Cloud."

This journey was carefully planned in conversations between the teams working on the process. The goal was to start using a series of microservices, which would provide cost savings and scalability, and implement an infrastructure to process data and handle algorithm applications using artificial intelligence.

To do this, hygia saúde added important solutions such as Vision AI, to read prescriptions and medical reports, and apply machine learning-based predictions to support users while they adjust their healthcare routines.

Another solution, Cloud Run, played a key role in managing instances for local hosting, while Dataproc was chosen to securely process previously compiled data. Cloud Storage and BigQuery, meanwhile, run machine-learning algorithms to increase speed, reliability, and delivery quality.

Numbers that make a difference

Another benefit was RAM optimization in Cloud SQL, which helped cut storage costs by a third. As for Vision AI, the accuracy of optical character recognition (OCR) increased by 15%, ensuring more accurate results for physicians and customers associated with the company.

"After implementing resources and maturing tool usage for 16 months, the latency time for data requests is now 40% lower compared with another cloud provider. This gave us access to best practices and made solutions faster and more scalable."

Another significant metric concerns data clustering time, which was shortened from five minutes to 90 seconds after adopting Dataproc - nearly a 70% decrease.

With so many benefits from using the products and an evolution in the company’s modernization, the startup intends to keep investing in tech trends.

"We have two priorities for the future: becoming a digital transformation benchmark in the healthcare chain and increasing our positive impact in the business environment."
