Medsender brings AI to healthcare practices everywhere
From artificial intelligence (AI)-aided diagnosis to digital-access appointments, advancements in healthcare technology continue to transform the lives of medical professionals and their patients. But healthcare documentation and communication processes remain outdated, with practices relying on sluggish fax machines, handwritten notes and prescriptions, and paper files that are susceptible to a high margin of error.
Medsender aims to reimagine healthcare communication by automating the process of sending, receiving, and managing documents. Administrative costs account for over a third of total healthcare expenditures in the United States. This includes the time, personnel, and manual systems it takes to complete tasks such as faxing medical records, receiving incoming documents, and managing patient information. This administrative burden creates barriers to providing proper patient care, a problem that Zain Qayyum, Co-CEO at Medsender, has experienced firsthand.
"A few years ago, my mom had a serious medical condition, and we constantly had to drive between different offices that were more than two and a half hours apart, just to pick up paper copies of her medical records," Qayyum says. "That's when I realized how broken healthcare communication is. Instead of going to medical school to try to make a difference, I decided this was the problem I wanted to tackle."
Qayyum saw an opportunity to modernize healthcare communication by leveraging new technologies. With an original goal to eliminate fax in healthcare, Qayyum teamed up with Mahmoud Tohmaz, CTO of Medsender, and then Haque to develop Medsender. As AI technologies advanced, Medsender evolved from a communication tool to a document automation platform that streamlines administrative work in healthcare.
Medsender has all the features of a traditional HIPAA-compliant tool, with integrated document sharing and editing, allowing providers and patients to complete, sign, and send records without leaving the platform. Using proprietary automation, the solution automatically titles, recognizes, categorizes, and extracts patient information. It then matches it with the correct chart and eliminates data entry, freeing up administrative staff to focus more on patient care.
"We realized in our evolution that streamlining fax was not the biggest challenge for us to solve," Haque says. "It was more about streamlining the associated administrative tasks that result from unstructured data in healthcare. Google Cloud enables us to do that."
Agile solutions, faster deployment, stronger results
Medsender chose to build its solution on Google Cloud largely due to the ability of Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) to auto-scale resources up and down, based on the demand of its workloads. During its initial implementation, the team was able to build and deploy its platform on GKE in less than two weeks.
In 2021, Medsender launched its first AI tool, a milestone the team attributes to the speed and flexibility of Google Cloud. Vertex AI securely extracts patient information to automatically label, categorize, and organize documents within an intuitive, cloud-based interface, housing them all in Cloud Storage. Generative AI enables Medsender to recognize, summarize, and create content, while Cloud Functions further optimizes and automates workflows at scale.
"Our focus is always on optimizing workflows and doing as much work for our clients as possible," Tohmaz says. "The more powerful AI tools we have, the more likely it is for us to run those workflows correctly and get documents in the right place, accessible by the right people."
As the AI landscape rapidly evolves, the Medsender team uses a combination of homegrown and third-party models to meet demand. The versatility of Google Cloud allows Medsender to host any AI model on its infrastructure, giving the company the agility needed to iterate faster.
"As a startup, we prioritize speed, and the ability to train and deploy new models quickly allows us to solve more problems for the healthcare professionals we work with," Tohmaz says. "If every experiment took weeks, it wouldn't be scalable. With Vertex AI, we can train, deploy, and test a model in a couple of days."

Building on Google Cloud from its inception has helped propel Medsender through its growth phase, with automated HIPAA compliance and built-in security features to safeguard the company today and for the future. Google Cloud handles these processes on the backend, allowing the Medsender team to focus on driving innovation.
