Delivers reliable infrastructure after cloud migration
An emerging market for air travel in the Southeast Asian region, Indonesia is seeing a shift of domestic travelers from land and sea transport to air travel due to rising income and the boom of low-cost carriers in the past decade. However, safety issues continue to be a persistent challenge in Indonesian aviation, with several major aircraft incidents affecting the reputation of Indonesia's air transport system.
Indonesian aviation faces numerous challenges, including poorly maintained and outdated infrastructure. Established in March 2012 by Angkasa Pura Airports, Angkasa Pura Supports (APS) has a business objective to improve the Angkasa Pura Airport’s customer satisfaction index (determined by services, facilities, and personnel) and non-aeronautical revenue through improvements in operating systems, equipment, and services. The company also does the procurement of goods and services needed by the parent company.
APS is in the midst of transforming its current on-premises IT infrastructure to be more agile and less limited by hardware and its considerably long turnaround time. The company wanted to better meet industry demands and keep up with the constantly changing aviation environment. Aditya Nataprawira, Assistant Manager Post Sales and Office Support at APS explains, “It was becoming difficult to manage our in-house hardware and systems as the infrastructure around them continues to grow and evolve.”
The company had security concerns on the existing server environment that was run on large servers and networking devices. “We had some issues such as unreliable mobile application access and intermittent loading problems of web applications, not to mention there were also several security attacks,” Nataprawira says.
APS migrated to Google Cloud in September 2018 for a more reliable and scalable cloud environment. “We wanted to shift our focus back to the core IT business rather than functioning as a cost center. We wanted to provide a reliable infrastructure to support the business directives. To do that, we needed to be able to self-manage so we could drive and influence business directives,” Nataprawira says.
APS is currently using Google Cloud products such as Cloud Storage, Compute Engine, Stackdriver, and third-party applications such as Palo Alto Networks and SAP. With the help of IT consulting firm InfoFabrica, APS went through a smooth proof-of-concept process and ran a successful migration test of the workload to be run on cloud, leading the company to decide on Google Cloud. “We chose Google Cloud because of its ability to fulfill our requirements directly, with quantifiable and workable solutions,” Nataprawira says.
Achieving targets for savings and speed, with Google Cloud
Prior to migration to Google Cloud, APS lacked agility when it came to developing business initiatives. “We wanted stable connectivity so we could deploy scalable infrastructure for web-based applications, while catering to peak period demand and reducing cost at the same time,” Nataprawira says.
In terms of human resources management, the company practices a regular online recruitment process, which is currently powered by Google Cloud. “Accessibility is much more reliable, as applicants can now access the portal directly from anywhere as long they have an internet connection,“ explains Nataprawira.
The one-month seamless migration to Google Cloud has also helped APS to successfully reduce monthly maintenance costs by 20% overall and significantly lower up-front capital costs. Time taken to set up, configure, and implement new servers has gone from three months to just one, thanks to the speed, flexibility for making changes and improvements, and easier deployment all enabled by APS’ new Google Cloud solution.
All of the on-premises apps now run on Google Cloud, which include databases, parking, file servers, web applications, online procurement, online recruitment, online contracts, and back-office applications. Nataprawira also comments that implementing a cloud solution allows APS to shift its focus back to the core IT business. “Google Cloud helps us to achieve a good return on investment and improve the turnaround time on our decision-making. This helps us meet the demands of our stakeholders, in line with our initiative to provide supporting infrastructure for our business drive.” He adds that the deployment process is “very fast,” as it took APS only three months to complete implementation after migrating to Google Cloud. “We reimagined internal processes, redirecting and educating users to adapt to the new cloud environment, as well as the new process, escalation, and support line,” Nataprawira adds.

After migrating to Google Cloud, APS sees a huge improvement in its internal work processes. For example, procurement time has been shortened from three months to three weeks, and security implementation process time shortened from two hours to 15 minutes. There’s also been a great improvement in analysis, with internal users of applications and workload services benefiting from 50% faster processes, as well as a wider range of insights on the valuable data gathered throughout these processes.
The old ways of procuring IT hardware involves processes like discovering business needs and initiatives, and the procurement team has to think of several alternatives of solutions and approaches, as well as conduct sizing and capacity planning for three to five years. In addition, the procurement team needs to conduct an ROI / TCO assessment, along with tender and procurement. The vendor will then order and ship the hardware (as imported goods) and ship to the customer after clearance from customs. The end-to-end process could take months to complete.
With Google Cloud, the end-to-end process has now been shortened through omission of the logistical process, as the solution can start being implemented just a few days after APS sends a purchase order to its vendor.
Nataprawira says there has been a 25% reduction in total cost of ownership, and APS has cut spending to external vendors: “Before moving to Google Cloud, we were spending a substantial amount on construction and operations because we had to outsource some jobs to other vendors.”
The company has also reduced its IT footprint by more than 90%. Felix Ricky Harjadi, Cloud Services Lead at Infofabrica adds that APS was mainly running on routers and networking devices and their legacy system was outdated. “APS no longer needs the supporting devices after migrating to Google Cloud. We’ve achieved a huge reduction in our IT footprint, while increasing efficiency.”
Application accessibility time, which previously took up to 10 seconds, now takes less than one second. On top of that, the turnaround time for application deployment now only takes several days, a huge improvement as it used to take around two months. The processing time for security implementation has also been streamlined from two hours to 15 minutes.

Security remains a top concern and challenge for enterprises such as APS, and Google Cloud provides a strong and flexible toolkit to help make a smooth transition to the cloud.
“As far as security risk is concerned, this is being managed by a third-party vendor. Security barriers such as firewalls are set up to block intrusions. We’ve reduced the number of security attacks after moving to Google Cloud, and we haven’t encountered any defacing or ransomware attacks since,” Nataprawira says.
Thanks to a successful cloud migration, security risk management, and reduction of its IT footprint, APS is looking forward to more smooth sailing on its digital transformation journey. This will allow it to continue supporting the business of its parent company and stay ahead of its competitors.
