Feature availability in Looker (Google Cloud core)

On this page, you will learn about Looker (Google Cloud core) features compared to Looker (original). Looker (Google Cloud core) features also vary by edition and network connection type.

Feature availability by instance type

The interface and functionality of a Looker (Google Cloud core) instance is virtually indistinguishable from a Looker (original) instance, but the two instance types are not identical. Some differentiating characteristics include the following:

Administrative compatibility by instance type

All administrative functions and settings for Looker (original) instances are managed in the Admin section of the Looker (original) instance. However, for Looker (Google Cloud core) instances, these settings are divided between the Admin section of the Looker (Google Cloud core) instance and the Google Cloud console.

Database connection compatibility by instance type

The list of supported database dialects that you can connect to your instance differs between Looker (original) and Looker (Google Cloud core).

For a list of database dialects that are supported by Looker (original) instances, see the Looker dialects documentation page.

For a list of database dialects that are supported by Looker (Google Cloud core) instances, see the Connecting Looker (Google Cloud core) to your database documentation page.

Feature compatibility by edition type

Some Looker (Google Cloud core) features vary depending on the instance edition. See the Looker (Google Cloud core) features and entitlements documentation page for more information.

Feature compatibility by network connection type

Four network configurations are available for Looker (Google Cloud core) instances:

  • Public: Network connection uses an external, internet-accessible IP address.
  • Private: Network connection uses an internal, Google-hosted Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) IP address and private services access. If your instance uses a private IP connection, additional configuration may be necessary to use some Looker (Google Cloud core) features or connect to external resources.
  • Public and private: Network connection uses both a public IP address and a private IP address. Incoming traffic is routed through public IP, and outgoing traffic is routed through private IP. A public and private configuration uses private services access to connect with external resources.
  • Private Service Connect: A private IP network connection that uses Private Service Connect to connect to external resources.

See the following table for feature availability with each network configuration of an instance.

Enable and configure certain Looker (Google Cloud core) instance features

Some Looker features require additional configuration in Looker (Google Cloud core) instances.

Looker Action Hub

Looker hosts and provides the Looker Action Hub, a stateless server that implements Looker's Action API and exposes integrations — also called actions — with third-party services. Data that your users send by using an action will be passed temporarily from your Looker (Google Cloud core) instance through the Looker Action Hub server. The Looker Action Hub is disabled by default in Looker (Google Cloud core) instances. To enable individual actions, a user with the Looker Admin role must click Enable next to the action on the Actions page in the Admin section of the Looker (Google Cloud core) instance and configure the action settings. The Looker Action Hub is not available for Looker (Google Cloud core) instances that use a private network connection.

Sample LookML project

Looker (Google Cloud core) provides a sample LookML project that can help you learn to write LookML, to query data, and to view and edit dashboards. The sample LookML project is provided on Looker (Google Cloud core) instances of all edition types. To use the sample LookML project, the BigQuery API must be enabled for your Google Cloud project.
