By adopting Google Cloud, the company managed not only to achieve regulatory compliance, but also ensure system maturity, focusing on quality, efficiency, and aggregate services.

Google Cloud results

  • Improved the operational efficiency of its services
  • Only five minutes to install an app in production
  • SLA for responding to complex requests below the 90 seconds mandated by regulators
  • Increased flexibility and ensured scalability

Cost savings of around 80%

TAG is a Brazilian financial market infrastructure operating as a card receivables registrar. A card receivable is an amount generated through transactions with debit/credit cards to be paid to a commercial entity in the future. TAG registers and manages these assets to increase transparency and security in the credit market.

"From a market perspective, we are looking for differentiators. Out of TAG’s 170 employees, 80% come from the tech industry. We breathe technology," says Caroline Serejo Cypriano, TAG’s Director.

In June 2021, Brazil’s Central Bank’s Circular No. 3952 and the country’s National Monetary Board’s Decision No. 4734 set specific rules to create a receivables register for payment arrangements. The goal was to give shopkeepers more freedom to negotiate their credit/debit card receivables, both to advance these assets and to enter into collateralized credit operations. This created a need to organize and standardize the companies operating in that segment, TAG included.

TAG’s concern for regulatory compliance converged with its consistent commitment to innovation. The company was closely following the processing of receivable units, which is complex and demands significant computing power. Because of those needs, the company began looking for solutions in the public cloud, leading to a wide array of opportunities.

"We were looking for security to go for a full platform deployment, minimizing risks. We chose Google Cloud due to network traffic requirements, one of the cloud’s strengths. As for mass data processing, Google Cloud’s team helped us with the project and supported everything tech-related."

Alexandre Brandão Lustosa, CTO, TAG

A new story begins

Among all the new developments, coming up with an architecture for the cloud was a challenge. However, by working together, the TAG and Google Cloud teams managed to keep things flowing more smoothly.

Apps were built to work in a container infrastructure, so they could provide flexibility and a smart use of resources. "We have been through these transformations and, since last year until today, we can say the system has matured," explains TAG’s Director.

As for the products, TAG’s team highlights both Cloud Bigtable, which helps the company with data processing, and Google Kubernetes Engine, which provides flexibility through a completely scalable infrastructure, where the company can plan and develop safely.

By using Pub/Sub, an efficient tool that works as a queuing system to load tasks simultaneously, the company can separate workflows thanks to its internal processing control. Its transparent infrastructure was another highlight for the team.

"These factors accelerate our growth and development. One positive aspect was that our professionals were able to do more deployments and we can now make decisions about the technology department more easily."

Besides the development team, the company has employees that work exclusively in the cloud. In other words, it’s a team that specializes in the business, assessing workflows, customizing and analyzing the usage of operational infrastructure as a whole.

Efficiency and cost savings

The ability to build services in the cloud quickly and TAG’s position as an automation-oriented company, especially regarding its infrastructure, were crucial to ensure a successful use of Google Cloud’s tools.

For example, the Cloud Bigtable deployment took only a month, already significantly improving computing performance on the eve of going into production.

With time, and supported by Google Cloud, TAG’s team continued to work on further increasing the operational efficiency of its services. Over the past few months, the company has achieved an 80% savings rate for infrastructure costs and increased the operational efficiency of its services.

"One of the outstanding achievements is the time it takes to properly install an app in production, which is just five minutes. We have also seen a service level agreement (SLA) for responding to complex requests below the 90 seconds mandated by regulators."

Ygor Moretti Araujo da Silva, Cloud Solution Manager, TAG

These benefits led TAG to start looking for other cloud features with potential to add more value to the company. One solution that has already been tested and is now being used by the data analytics team is Cloud Functions, which proved strategic in making request processing more efficient.

"Google Cloud’s operations suite can provide support with analytics and insights. We are probably going to use it in the near future. We intend to keep improving our data structure to provide a competitive differentiator," says Ygor Moretti.
