The logistics ecosystem in Indonesia is particularly complex, due to the geographical landscape of the country that encompasses thousands of islands, and its diverse economy, among other factors. With the goal to simplify this complex logistics ecosystem, Shipper is an international organization that’s on a mission to become the top e-commerce enabler in the world.
Founded in Indonesia, Shipper has two offices, with one located in Jakarta, Indonesia, and another in Hangzhou, China. Its strategic locations have put the company in a good position to grow its global presence. But to truly be at the forefront of innovation and fully leverage the digital capabilities that’s available to spearhead the business, it needed a platform that would enable seamless integration between applications, and boost collaboration among employees.
Agus Daud, Vice President Engineering at Shipper says, "Our decision to implement Google Cloud and Google Workspace was driven by the desire to provide an enhanced user experience, optimize resource allocation, and improve data management and analysis capabilities while overcoming the various integration challenges with different platforms."
Alongside the support from Google Cloud partner Point Star, the organization migrated to Google Workspace and leveraged Google Cloud tools to support its mission.

With more than 500 employees, Shipper needed a flexible and collaborative work environment, so that employees could easily access the essential tools and data needed for their day-to-day operations.
Prior to Google Workspace, the team was often unable to access crucial information they needed during the pandemic, when they could not be at the office. That is because such information was scattered across various locations, such as in disparate email threads and as offline data in laptops, which made finding and managing data challenging.
Thus, the versatility of Google Workspace stood out to Daud and his team. "As a cloud-based platform, Google Workspace was perfect to facilitate remote work. It allows employees to easily collaborate and interact with each other even when they are outside the office," says Daud.
With Gmail, Calendar, and Google Meet all integrated, teams at Shipper could easily communicate, whether through text or face-to-face via virtual meetings. With Calendar, employees could give their co-workers full visibility of their schedule, which was helpful for planning meetings.
"Gmail, Calendar, and Meet have proven to be incredibly valuable in enhancing my day-to-day work experience and improving collaboration and communication both within and outside the company," says Daud. Integrating the different tools on Google Workspace helped Shipper streamline workflows and improve productivity by at least 50 percent.
Meanwhile, on the back end, application updates, maintenance, and security are all automated on Google Cloud, allowing Shipper’s small IT team to focus on other critical tasks, rather than manage the needs of the organization’s 500-people strong team.

Having seamless accessibility to the various applications within the company has boosted productivity and given employees the freedom to work from various locations. However, it is the security features within the Google Workspace architecture that truly gives Daud a peace of mind in implementing the platform.
"Because of the zero trust capabilities that have been built into Google Workspace, we know that all of our data is kept secure no matter where we access it from," says Daud. "Allowing teams to work virtually from any device securely is aligned with our goal of providing our employees the ability to work from anywhere."
With access control, the management can easily allow or prevent access to users based on their IP range, and even control the browser types for an added layer of security. Such features not only ensure that company resources are accessed by authorized users, but prevent unauthorized access from potentially risky locations.
The ability to do data labeling and policy application labeling provide an efficient way to organize and apply policies to data in Drive. This allows for granular control over how data is handled, ensuring that sensitive information is appropriately managed and protected. The data loss prevention capabilities that Google Workspace enables further helps maintain data confidentiality. For example, it has safeguarded 9,337 confidential and top-secret documents between the period of April to June 2023 alone.
Navigating organizational change with partner support
Upon the migration to Google Workspace, the Google team, together with PointStar, equipped Shipper employees with comprehensive training sessions and other resources. Employees who encountered challenges in the initial stages were also encouraged to reach out for one-on-one to help in navigating the new platform and learn how to use specific features. says Daud. This helped ease the transition, particularly among employees who may be more resistant to change, to adopt new practices.
"PointStar’s support and expertise have been instrumental in ensuring a smooth transition and ongoing management of our Google Workspace environment. Our working relationship with PointStar has been characterized by collaboration, reliability, and valuable guidance. They have consistently demonstrated their commitment to our success by providing timely assistance and sharing best practices," shares Daud.
Linking data on BigQuery with Google Workspace for better analytics
As a data-driven company, much of the business decisions made at Shipper stems from data. However, making sense of data required moving data across platforms frequently. This used to be a hassle as data engineers had to migrate data from a different analytics platform to Sheets. To better streamline processes, Shipper migrated its data warehouse in February 2023 to BigQuery for faster query performance and seamless data import and export between Sheets.
"The ability to transfer data between Sheets and BigQuery has led to an increased efficiency and improved the user experience. Now, our data engineers can easily access BigQuery, transfer the data they need over to Sheets, and analyze data quickly, which has sped up our decision making process," says Daud.

Even though the majority of its operations now run on Google Workspace, there are still parts of the business that are hosted on other platforms. One of these areas is in the use of a different chat platform, where there are plans to transition users completely to Google Chat. "Currently, we feel that the integration capabilities of Google Chat may still be relatively limited compared to the provider we are using, but enhancing its integration capabilities would really complement our broader business goals in enabling seamless and efficient cross-functional interactions," explains Daud.
As Shipper continues to expand, it is relying on the scalability of Google Workspace to accommodate the growing workloads it anticipates. "Our business envisions a trajectory marked by progressive growth in the coming years, and we believe that Google Workspace holds a pivotal role to play as a facilitator, empowering us with its robust suite of collaborative tools and commitment to continuous enhancements," says Daud.
