The Solution
Migrating toward innovation and a new fan experience
Today advanced data analytics are crucial to an organization’s ability to respond to change and thrive. Yet many businesses aren’t getting actionable insights from their data. Creating a smarter way for fans to jump in
From the spin rate on a ball to how many hot dogs are sold
in a stadium, MLB is capturing it all, and with the help of
Google Cloud, they’re able to ingest, store, organize, and
analyze all of that data to make informed decisions across
their business. These innovations support the development and evolution of
tools like Statcast. Statcast is a state-of-the-art tracking
technology that allows for the collection and analysis of a
massive amount of baseball data in real time across all 30
ballparks. By upgrading Statcast with Google Cloud’s data
capabilities, Statcast has shown significant accuracy
improvements in pitch, hit, player tracking, and
pose-tracking capabilities, opening up exciting new ways for
fans to more deeply understand what’s happening in real
time. Real-time personalized fan experiences are at the forefront
of this partnership, including leveraging Google Cloud’s AI
offerings and expertise, and exploring ways to integrate
technology into improving the fan experience at home, or in
the ballpark. With migration to Google Cloud, MLB enhanced performance of
their in-house video search and content creation
applications, enabling MLB to launch
MLB Film Room.
Film Room is a highlight clip platform on MLB.com, giving
fans access to search and enjoy over 5 million clips with
millions of possible searches including by player, team,
play, pitch type, game situation, and much more with content
dating all the way back to 1929.
Delivering operational efficiency fit for the big leagues
With Anthos, MLB can unify its Google Cloud infrastructure
with its on-premise systems at all 30 ballparks to a unified
control plane. This allows MLB to simplify operations and
deliver applications faster, and scale its architecture to
handle vast amounts of new data from Statcast cameras
located at each park. This helps power MLB’s latest
innovation, Fieldvision, which combines player tracking,
ball tracking, and game context recognition to give both
fans and teams greater insight into the game. Fieldvision leverages Google’s AI and computer vision to
autonomously film every angle of every second of every play,
analyzing the mechanics and physics behind every seemingly
impossible play. Anthos gives IT professionals a single platform to manage
applications across environments, saving time on management
and speeding up modernization. The MLB migration to Google
Cloud has enabled the league to share data across its teams
and operations, and has already resulted in an exponential
