Papel San Francisco has been developing and selling tissue paper products such as toilet paper, napkins, and paper towels since 1980. Even though the company has grown, it has preserved its streamlined structure, a key factor in its development. Papel San Francisco currently has its own factories in Mexicali, Monterrey, and Guadalajara.

As it needed to improve service levels, infrastructure security, and spending efficiency, Papel San Francisco began migrating its servers from a private to a public cloud. With SAP solutions, the organization began a journey along with Google Cloud to manage its resources more efficiently.

“We realized we were not doing as well as we thought and Google Cloud’s tools offered us the chance to improve our service. In less than six months, we were already in Google Cloud.”

Sergio Colunga, IT Deputy Director, Papel San Francisco

Flexibility for business growth

One of the main reasons behind Papel San Francisco’s decision to migrate its servers was how easy it was to start the change process seamlessly.

The solutions’ flexibility also provided the company with the security it needed for the acquisition and to continue offering a 100% available service, one of its core values.

With help from Google Cloud and partner Xertica, Papel San Francisco achieved a secure migration in less than six months - the process began in August 2020 with a proof of concept and was completed in January 2021.

“Hopping onto Google Cloud is very easy. For me, availability, security, and flexibility are the most important values behind this migration’s success. Google also always has your back.”

Sergio Colunga, IT Deputy Director, Papel San Francisco

During the migration process, the company managed to implement the SAP environments without any problems. Many of its working teams were surprised to discover that the migration was a lot simpler than they had anticipated.

Colunga highlighted that the simplicity and ease of migration were crucial factors. The company was on the verge of a major technological leap.

The challenges of change

Google Cloud helped Papel San Francisco reorganize its team more efficiently to allow it to devote less time to identifying vulnerabilities in the infrastructure and more to tasks adding value to the business.

“In Google Cloud you can activate a server almost immediately,” said Colunga, adding that this simplicity reduces red tape when more servers are needed, thus increasing employee availability to tackle more complex tasks.

The SAP environments in Google Cloud were also crucial to cut down the number of data rooms the company used from three to one, and to transform those spaces into working offices.

“Google Cloud enables us to work with increased operativity and productivity, and efficiently use resources to increase business sustainability.”

Sergio Colunga, IT Deputy Director, Papel San Francisco

Achieving results with the public cloud

Papel San Francisco currently has several active landscapes with various SAP solutions in Google Cloud, including S/4HANA as a core solution and most of SAP’s standard products, such as Business Warehouse (BW), Process Orchestration (PO), Business Objects (BO), Advanced Planner and Optimizer (APO), Manufacturing Integration and Intelligence (MII), and Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC).

The company has a total of 36 active servers, including development, quality, and production environments. It also has separate Compute Engine instances in each landscape for databases and apps in the production environments. For S/4HANA’s production environment, it has a server to actively replicate databases to ensure quick recovery in case of failure.

With SAP’s solutions in Google Cloud, Papel San Francisco managed to overcome another challenge: making the migration transparent for users without affecting the way they work.

All these advantages have led to significant savings for the company: over 37% in operating IT infrastructure and services expenses (OPEX) per year.

The company’s needs increasingly demand IT projects requiring shorter execution times, which is why Papel San Francisco is assessing the incorporation of more Google Cloud tools, always with service quality in mind.
