First public cloud provider to offer virtual machines using Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory

In July, Google Cloud announced a new partnership with Intel and SAP to offer GCP virtual machines supporting Intel’s Optane DC Persistent Memory. This was a significant step forward for customers that handle and store large amounts of data and run in-memory databases such as SAP HANA.

We recently announced the availability of virtual machines with 7 TB of total memory utilizing Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory.

Enterprise customers need increased scaling, reduced latency, and improved efficiency for their in-memory databases. Early customers have seen as much as a 12x improvement in SAP HANA start-up times using Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory. And with lower total cost of ownership (TCO) compared to DRAM-based VMs, GCP customers using this technology no longer have to balance operational efficiency against cost.

Google Cloud is the first public cloud provider to offer virtual machines using Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory, in addition to even larger Optane-based VM offerings to follow in 2019.

These announcements are part of our larger commitment to providing infrastructure and platform innovation through our deep engineering collaboration with Intel and SAP. GCP VMs with Optane memory are now available in limited quantities for interested customers — you can sign up here to be part of our alpha program.

Benefits of using Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors(Skylake) on Google Cloud Platform

Google Cloud was the first cloud provider to offer Skylake, enabling Google Cloud customers to have early access to Intel’s latest technology. Below are the benefits of using the latest Intel Xeon Scalable processors on GCP.

Faster response times for a wide range of workloads

Google Cloud customers have run millions of hours on Skylake machine types, seeing increased performance for a variety of applications such as 3D rendering, genomic research, HPC, financial risk calculations, scientific visualizations, and data analytics.

Choose the best processor for your workload

Leverage the flexibility to choose the best processor for your workload needs with the CPU platform selector tool. Select a specific Intel CPU platform, and Google Compute Engine will always schedule your machine type to that CPU family or above.

Double the floating point performance

Applications that take advantage of Intel AVX-512 in Skylake can benefit from up to 2x floating point performance in order to handle your most compute-intensive workloads.

Custom Machine Types

Leverage Google’s expertise in workload scheduling through Custom Machine Types. Size your machine types to existing workloads and efficiently schedule jobs and machine types of any size to avoid overpaying.

Per-second billing

Run more, save more; up to 30% monthly discount automatically with Google Cloud Platform. Pay only for what you need while you are using it.

Worldwide availability

Skylake now generally available in 17 Google Cloud regions, listed here.

Enhance the performance and scaling of Intel Skylake processors on GCP with Intel Performance Libraries and Intel Distribution for Python

The Intel Distribution for Python and Intel Performance Libraries are now freely available for Compute Engine on GCP. The Python distribution supports both Python 2 and Python 3 and includes highly optimized popular libraries NumPy, SciPy, and scikit-learn. The performance libraries integrate key communication and computation kernels that have been tuned and optimized for this latest Intel processor family, in terms of both sequential pipeline flow and parallel execution, but are also useful across all Intel Xeon processor families in GCP. They are of particular interest for applications that can use them to fully exploit the scale of 96 vCPU instances on Skylake-based servers. For more details, including performance benchmarks, read the blog post.
