  • Offers multi-tenant cloud platforms that allow customers to use necessary functions on secure cloud at low cost
  • Reduces maintenance workloads for infrastructure engineers
  • Ensures consistent security policies are enforced across environments

Driving JBCC's multi cloud strategy by simplifying multi cloud management at lower cost and reduced labor intensity

JBCC Co., Ltd. (JBCC) is a comprehensive IT services company that handles system design, implementation, and operation on the cloud. Since its establishment in 1964, JBCC has been instrumental in supporting the digital transformation of over 20,000 local enterprise customers.

To meet the rising needs of customers more effectively and at lower cost, the company decided to enhance its multi-cloud strategy. "Although we have experience in offering multi-cloud based infrastructures, we wanted to go further. We decided to offer pre-made infrastructures running on different environments to customers, versus building on-demand multi-cloud based architectures one by one as we previously did," says Fujii.

"The good thing about Anthos is that you can run GKE (Google Kubernetes Engine), which is a managed Kubernetes environment unique to Google, across different clouds and on-premise environments. It simplifies multi cloud management. We first discovered it at Google Cloud Anthos Day in January 2020 and looked into it immediately."

Less cost, more flexibility

Fujii highlights three benefits of Anthos when it comes to building multi cloud based infrastructures. First, Anthos greatly reduces workloads for their infrastructure engineers in managing multi cloud platforms.

"Each cloud platform provides similar functions, but can differ slightly based on different features and usability requirements provided on the same Kubernetes infrastructure. Since Anthos enables all your cloud infrastructures to be built around GKE, it removes the need for our infrastructure engineers to handle these differences and details."

Second, Anthos centralises the management of distributed application configurations across different clouds. According to Fukushima, separately managing application configurations using different management tools for each cloud, is challenging. With Anthos, JBCC is able to aggregate traces like logs, metrics, and alerts all on a single Google Cloud platform.

"Plus, Config Management allows you to enforce a consistent security policy across environments, which is extremely convenient," adds Fukushima.

Third, Anthos reduces maintenance cost. Flexible monthly pay-as-you-go or subscription billing means companies can build according to their specific needs and budgets, making it available to many companies, regardless of their size. "What I personally value most about Anthos is that I can completely leave the management functions to Google Cloud," says Fujii. "Other companies offering similar services would charge extra to build out a monitoring system and increase visibility. Anthos clears these budgetary concerns on potential maintenance costs, making it very attractive."

Utilizing the full potential of Anthos and GKE

Mirai Lab is currently looking at how Anthos can be deployed more widely within the business, mainly within two focus areas.

"We’re looking at whether the current business functions we offer can be used as a foundation to build out a SaaS-like platform, across more cloud environments," says Fujii. "Next, we’d like to offer multi-tenant cloud architectures to our customers. With increased demand from customers asking us to both build and operate these infrastructures, we need a solution that’s scalable."

"Building out the system architecture one by one as we previously did is not effective. Instead, we’re looking to build around containers and let customers choose the functions that only they need," adds Fujii. "Using infrastructures with excellent availability at low cost, while having the freedom of choice in which platform to use, will put us ahead of the competition. JBCC hopes to leverage the strengths of Google Cloud, including AI and machine learning products and Spanner to create better services," concludes Fujii.
