The Consejo Colombiano de Seguridad - CCS (Colombian Security Council) is an organization advocating for the comprehensive wellbeing of workers through authenticity and operational excellence. It is a technical innovation benchmark for public institutions and industry organizations. The CCS generates knowledge that can be applied to efficient processes for occupational hazards management, environmental protection, and sustainable management.
With over 300 employees and offices in Bogotá, Barranquilla, Cali, and Medellín, transcending barriers to make a healthier and safer world is the leitmotif that has guided the organization along the path of innovation.
In this context, the CCS decided to improve several technical aspects of its infrastructure, which included optimizing operational processes, updating technological services, modernizing technological infrastructure, and carrying out a complete digital transformation.
360° view for digital transformation
Faced with the task of transitioning to a more modern and scalable cloud infrastructure, the CCS needed to catch up with technology to prevent difficulties in some of the organization's daily operations and, therefore, business objectives.
In this scenario, the CCS also suffered two important episodes of cyberattacks, which highlighted the need to safeguard data more efficiently through more advanced security measures.
The infrastructure also had to be completely upgraded to become resilient and scalable, ensuring the high availability of services and future adaptability.
"In the Consejo Colombiano de Seguridad, we were aware of our obligation to embrace technological transformation by deploying more modern tools, which would allow us to make strategic decisions based on predictive models."
—Adriana Solano Luque, CEO, Consejo Colombiano de SeguridadAs a result, the agency decided to contact Google Cloud and leverage a comprehensive combination of solutions that would enhance the CCS's commitment to operational excellence and information security.
"Our end clients trust us because they know we offer strong support and that we have invested in optimal solutions to improve their productivity and assist them in their processes," adds Gabriel Aguilera Gutiérrez, Data Scientist at the CCS.
Rightsized solutions for exponential growth
The main challenge for the CCS was continuing to operate normally during the migration of its entire data center to Google Cloud, as well as regular challenges associated with changes.
As a result, the deployment phase was divided into six stages based on their level of complexity: from the most basic level, with the migration of every worker's emails, to the most complex, which involved the use of generative AI and data analytics tools for new developments.
Google Cloud solutions were crucial for streamlining this process, freeing up resources so that collaborators could focus even more on innovation and less on infrastructure matters.
One of the technologies the CCS used was Cloud Data Fusion. This tool shortened data centralization process times and reduced the need for human monitoring thanks to the power of automation.
The agency also adopted BigQuery to centralize and enhance data administration and analytics in its systems. This allowed the CCS to integrate its own software development sources with external information systems and store data on new processes that surface in daily operations.
Dataplex also bolstered the data governance of the CCS by unifying distributed data and automating data administration. Cloud Data Fusion and BigQuery were used for this purpose to help identify, extract, and store data sources. Employees can now quickly understand which data source they can use for each of the organization's internal processes.
"We view Google Cloud as a friend that accompanies us, guides us through opportunities for improvement, and stands by us to help overcome obstacles."
—Carlos Augusto Bermúdez Fonnegra, IT Manager, Consejo Colombiano de SeguridadFinally, the CCS is also working on a chatbot prototype using Vertex AI. The aim is to take advantage of all its new potential to access the agency's historical data with BigQuery and develop solutions capable of improving its processes and products using generative AI.
The first chatbot prototype of the CCS is used by one of its services providing advice on managing chemical emergencies. This solution uses Vertex AI to generate more effective data analytics compared with manual searches and to respond to chemical emergencies quickly.
"With this chatbot, we're trying to anticipate potential chemical emergency outcomes to provide solutions for an important, large-scale problem and achieve the top priority of the CCS, which is to help people save lives," says Gabriel Aguilera Gutiérrez.
Technological innovation, exponential growth
Adopting Google Cloud solutions has had a positive impact for the CCS since it has managed to make better use of its own data and improve its analytics processes as a result.
The CCS has undergone an unprecedented transformation in which process automation has become prominent and operational efficiency has improved. Operating expenses have decreased while process automation has shortened execution times from 8 hours to 15 minutes.
The organization has also experienced radical changes in its culture with improved teamwork and more employee effectiveness and efficiency. Productivity in the operation of the CCS has grown by 30%.
Regarding business outcomes, its technology sector has increased by 50%, with availability and ease of use for their RUC®️ Model (its main product) exceeding all expectations.
After implementing Google Cloud, the agency has achieved enhanced customer satisfaction, driven innovation, and accelerated competitive differentiation.
Aligning efforts for global impact
The next step for the CCS is to broaden the impact of its data modeling and analysis project: the Observatory on Occupational Health and Safety.
Using generative AI tools, the aim is to provide clients with useful insights on industrial safety and accidents to improve decision-making.
The observatory will operate on three levels in stages. Currently, it operates internally, although it is projected to become a beacon for Colombia and the world, turning the CCS into a data governance benchmark.
"We view Google Cloud not just as a mere solutions provider but as a part of the Consejo Colombiano de Seguridad. Our organization lives and breathes Google, and that makes us proud."
