Up to 50% increase in freight volume for Lion Parcel in 2023
Imagine the challenge of offering end-to-end delivery services in Indonesia, a massive archipelago of nearly 18,000 islands covering an area of nearly two million square kilometers. It's one that Lion Parcel meets day-in day-out to serve 98 percent of areas in Indonesia with affordable reliability, making it one of the leaders in its field.
As a subsidiary of Lion Group, Indonesia's top airline group, Lion Parcel can depend upon a fleet of 350+ aircraft to crisscross Indonesia, bringing parcels to the farthest reaches of the nation and international countries. It has a network of more than 15,000 couriers bringing goods to Indonesian doorsteps on far-flung islands. This complex high volume operation requires real-time logistical intelligence and highly scalable computing capabilities to ensure effective business processes.
Originally, Lion Parcel operated in a high maintenance, on-premise environment with a high-risk operating system. To handle escalating demand, it added servers, which burdened the DevOps team with mundane provisioning chores. In particular, the firm found itself hampered by the inability to efficiently scale up and down during ecommerce promotions and holiday seasons.
Lion Parcel decided to embark upon a comprehensive Google Cloud migration thanks to what it saw as best-in-class reliability and autoscaling computing agility.
Working with partner Eikon, the firm built its cloud solution around Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) for a nimble microservices architecture. According to Probosetyo Krishna, Head of IT, Lion Parcel, the results were "transformational" as the company quickly boosted operational efficiency to optimize business processes.
"The agile autoscaling capabilities of Google Kubernetes Engine were a game-changer in enhancing our mission to provide the most reliable and affordable end-to-end delivery services across Indonesia," says Krishna. "Our partner Eikon helped us with optimizations that significantly streamlined our operations to enhance competitive edge and boosted effective business processes."

Lion Parcel's partnership with Eikon centered around developing a world-class Google Cloud ecosystem. This included using Cloud SQL as a fully-managed relational database service and Pub/Sub as a scalable messaging service to seamlessly connect to GKE. Meanwhile, Cloud Armor became a crucial protection against denial-of-service attacks that could harm the credibility of the firm's delivery business.
For backend operations that do not require real-time autoscaling, Lion Parcel decided to deploy Compute Engine virtual machines for more affordable cloud computing that does not require consistently high availability.
"One of the key impacts we have achieved with Google Cloud is building a seamless ecosystem of powerful solutions that streamline operations, freeing up our team for creative solution building," says Krishna. "This enables us to improve our bottom line as well as invest in future technologies and innovation."

—Probosetyo Krishna, Head of IT, Lion ParcelAchieving excellence in DORA Metrics
One of the unexpected advantages of tapping Google Cloud was proactive support from the Google Cloud team itself, which went beyond a client-vendor relationship to be a true collaborator in solution building. This ranged from technical support to guidance on new features for GKE. "Our relationship goes beyond simply buying products to become a kind of friendship," says Krishna.
Lion Parcel has reaped significant advantages from this relationship building with both Eikon and Google Cloud teams. Through GKE optimizations, for example, the Lion Parcel DevOps team is entirely freed of the chore of provisioning memory and messaging queues for Kubernetes clusters, since those tasks are automated in the auto scaling microservices platform.
Through Google Cloud adoption Lion Parcel has achieved significant measurable results in DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA) metrics, which the logistics firm has adopted for DevOps management. These Google Cloud endorsed benchmarks provide best practices for gauging performance in software development.
The four key metrics are 1) Deployment Frequency, how often an organization successfully releases to production 2) Lead Time for Changes, the amount of time it takes a commit to get into production 3) Change Failure Rate, the percentage of deployments causing a failure in production 4) Time to Restore Service, how long it takes an organization to recover from a failure in production.
In each case, Lion Parcel achieved significant improvements through an architecture built around GKE, with CloudSQL and Pub/Sub in supporting roles. Improved DORA benchmarks greatly enhanced the team's ability to upgrade its logistics solutions with a steady and reliable stream of digital features.
Lion Parcel now operates with a more seamless and integrated system infrastructure that enables effective business and operational processes. This includes more data-driven company decisions that lead to better outcomes. All of these improvements helped Lion Parcel increase its freight volume by up to 50% in 2023 through its transition to Google Cloud from an on-premise infrastructure. In turn, Lion Parcel has been able to invest in the next stages of its digital transformation including AI innovation
"With GKE, we have achieved a DORA metrics transformation that allows us to continuously improve our logistics services with new APIs and innovations," says Krishna. "Our cost optimizations also allow us to drive a future of new delivery services that will be built around machine learning."

—Probosetyo Krishna, Head of IT, Lion ParcelBuilding the future of regional logistics with AI automation
Lion Parcel is now aiming to deploy intelligent automation to enhance user experience and serve individualized needs. That includes exploring deployment of Vertex AI for a chatbot that will facilitate customer orders and tracking, and enable savings in operational expenses.
Lion Parcel has also begun to leverage BigQuery to crunch customer data to unlock more tailored logistics offerings and more precise delivery routes and warehouse optimization.
"We see an unlimited future of partnership with Google Cloud on advanced machine learning solutions to keep improving our services and expanding beyond Indonesia to the wider region," says Krishna. "We're excited about the dynamic possibilities of innovation that we can achieve with Google Cloud."
