Turnover increased by 130% with GFSA and Google Cloud

Cammila Yochabell had the idea to create Jobecam back in 2016, while thinking how to stand out during a recruitment process. As a Human Resources professional, she knew the challenges facing recruiters during often exhausting hiring flows—and the difficulties for candidates who wanted to be considered not just for their resume.

Using that reflection as a starting point, the current CEO began structuring the startup. That same year, the company began developing a platform to record and deliver video resumes and recorded interviews to increase the chances of inclusion in the recruitment process of large companies. In 2017, they decided to implement Google Cloud Speech-to-Text to transcribe the videos’ audio and created an algorithm to rank the most suitable profiles.

“We were already using Google Cloud’s Speech-to-Text tool to connect user profiles and experiences with what recruiters were looking for. In other words, what mattered wasn’t the candidate’s race, gender, skin color or origin, but whether they fulfilled the requirements of the position.”

Then, in 2018, talking to the HR head of a renowned company, Cammila realized that the platform was already designed for blind recruitments due to the ranking feature. Nevertheless, she enhanced the tool by creating a model for blind video interviews that would provide opportunities for a larger number of candidates throughout Brazil.

“That’s how we came up with the idea of having blind recorded pre-interviews, hiding all the data, distorting the candidate’s voice, and not showing their face,” the CEO explains. “Recently, we launched a blind live video call interview, also hiding the image and distorting the interviewee’s voice, but with real-time interaction with recruiters and/or managers.”

A fresh new start for Jobecam

During that period, Cammila met Diogo Felizardo and Eugênio de Carli, who are now partners at the company as well. Together, they focused on turning the platform into a tool for creating social impact and providing accessibility to marginalized social groups —in an unprecedented way for the market.

The new operational method began yielding its first results and blind interviews started having an impact. The CEO started hearing stories from people who used to be excluded even from initial interviews due to their social extraction, for example. Now, they completed the different stages of the recruitment process because the candidate’s professional skills had become more important than any social condition.

However, despite this positive outlook, the startup was not obtaining a financial return from the efforts, which were designed to encourage more companies to maintain blind hiring process. This changed in June 2020, when Jobecam was selected for the fifth group of Google for Startups Accelerator. Cammila explains how it happened. “Accelerator took us out of our comfort zone and the mentorships we had during the program showed that we were not on the right track.”

The acceleration program helped the team to turn its focus on the target audience and its needs to find new solutions. The company was in a hurry, mainly due to the business impacts of the pandemic, which froze investments and contracts and forced the startup to downsize its team. “Our road map was completely remodeled during the acceleration, which also taught us things about management, the importance of setting OKRs, and business, time and focus planning,” added Cammila.

Cloud solutions to drive performance

The mentorships also introduced new Google Cloud solutions to make the process more agile and efficient, another crucial aspect in Jobecam’s evolution. The team was able to deploy improvements in the use of Speech-to-Text and automate resource management.

Now, the videos are stored in Cloud Storage, providing an even better experience for recruiters. “Video latency and response times are faster, so the person watching the video will not experience any delays,” explains Eugênio De Carli, the startup’s CTO. Furthermore, Firebase streamlined platform management and reduced service times.

“Firebase makes it extremely easily to upload modifications, make corrections and even managing scale inside it.”

On the platform, they were able to cut build times in the cloud by 62%, from 40 to 15 minutes, and processing times for automatic speech recognition (using Speech-to-Text) by 93%, from five minutes to 20 seconds. This resulted in a faster and easier experience for both recruiters and candidates and cut down server costs. Firebase Hosting costs were reduced by 98%, from R$ 580 to R$ 10 per month.

The IT team is also planning to deploy Google Cloud’s artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions, which will be yet another watershed moment, according to the CTO.

A solid platform and growing turnover

Today, Jobecam is a platform connecting various companies with more than 50,000 job candidates in Brazil online. The process shake-up led to a 130% increase in turnover in the social-distancing phase alone.

“After four years in operation, we were able to provide our clients with a platform that is more solid, robust, dynamic and easier to use. We genuinely aim to have a social impact and also want to help organizations increase their efficiency and cut costs through a streamlined recruitment process.”
