Prototyping cost-effective AI-assisted features on Google Cloud infrastructure
In a world of user-friendly consumer apps, the comparatively poor omnichannel experience of many large enterprises' platforms can leave consumers feeling frustrated. With IT infrastructure monoliths built over the course of several decades, mergers or disjointed departmental roadmaps, banks and insurance companies can often find themselves in a patchwork of systems that can be difficult to navigate and incredibly costly to maintain.
It is estimated that enterprises spend up to 80% of their IT budgets keeping these legacy systems going, leaving just a fifth to modernize their systems and improve the customer experience.
For Serban Chiricescu, Co-Founder and CTO of FlowX, enabling enterprises to modernize their software quickly and at scale is unlocking systemic benefits for all of us. The end-game: better experience for both end-users and internal teams alike (developers, business analysts, managers).
"Almost all aspects of our lives depend on the quality of the software used by big enterprises, from finance to agriculture to government," explains Chiricescu. "But most of it is running on old, broken systems. Whether it's waste disposal companies unable to remove waste, or friction when talking to banks about a mortgage, it all has an impact on our daily lives. At FlowX, we're giving control back to these enterprises to deliver modern, user-friendly applications to improve their customers' quality of life."
Running on Google Cloud, FlowX provides enterprises with a platform on top of their existing infrastructure to quickly build, run, and maintain new digital systems, before gradually replacing the legacy systems below with modern, scalable infrastructure. The platform generates state-of-the-art user interfaces with AI, meaning enterprises don't need coding or design skills to create their solutions, and are able to use natural language commands to easily build and optimize their customer applications.
Fast, flexible development with Google Kubernetes Engine
When searching for a cloud solution on which to build FlowX, Serban knew he wanted to use Kubernetes. He and the team opted for the previously tried-and-tested reliability and cost-effectiveness of the Google Kubernetes Engine to start prototyping.
"Google Kubernetes Engine is among the best managed Kubernetes solution," says Chiricescu. "It is easy to integrate with preemptible virtual machines to reduce costs, and it helped us understand how we needed to set up projects and the whole organization, which was very important in the early days of the startup."
With Google Cloud, FlowX now has a reliable platform to create new, fully provisioned development environments in just five minutes, giving it the flexibility it needs to create new features in isolation. This means that it is able to continually roll out new functionality for its customers, as well as react quickly to any vulnerabilities as they emerge, publishing new hot fixes in just a couple of hours.
"Google Kubernetes Engine is by far the best managed Kubernetes solution. It is easy to integrate with preemptible virtual machines to reduce costs and it helped us understand how we needed to set up projects and the whole organization, which was very important in the early days of the startup."
—Serban Chiricescu, Co-Founder and CTO, FlowX.AIStarting out with around 100 workloads in one environment, FlowX is currently running 700 workloads across its R&D environments. It also benefits from the autoscaling feature of Google Kubernetes Engine, which automatically scales development environments up and down according to usage, helping to ensure it is only paying for the resources it uses.
"Each new feature of the platform is developed in an entirely new environment, so autoscaling is important, as it means we are able to automatically scale down those environments whenever there is no activity," Chiricescu explains. "It has saved us over 50% of our cloud invoice."
Building user-friendly functionality with Google Cloud AI
With AI being an integral part of its platform, FlowX also takes advantage of some of the benefits enabled by Google Cloud AI solutions. One example of this is adding optimization layers on top of open-source large language models in secure, single tenant environments, which enables FlowX to create natural language functionality for its clients, enabling them to interact with the FlowX platform in a simple and intuitive way to build the apps they need. Clients are also able to gain documentation and recommendations, as well as receive automated support to optimize and test their features, helping them to modernize their platforms in the most efficient and effective way.
"It's important to have a cloud solution where we can experiment with large language models in isolation, rather than a SaaS provider that gives us no control over how private data is used. Being able to play around with different models in an agile way helps us move fast as a business."

The machine learning prototyping team at FlowX also uses Vertex AI to customize some of its large language models, as well as to train models for specific platform functionality. For example, FlowX recently developed machine learning algorithms to provide customers with real-time feedback on how long a particular process will take until it is complete. Being able to test these algorithms in Vertex AI meant that the team was able to understand how they perform and fine-tune them prior to going live.
A platform for future growth
Fresh off the heels of securing a whopping $35 million—marking the most substantial Series A funding in the enterprise software realm in recent years—FlowX is making waves as it expands into new markets. With an ambitious growth plan, the focus is clear: infuse even more AI capabilities, ensuring their clients can effortlessly modernize their systems. Serban Chiricescu, co-founder and CTO at FlowX praises Google Cloud for helping to streamline their operations. Having a suite of tools at their disposal means their R&D team can work seamlessly, without the hassle of hopping between platforms.
"Google Cloud has given us the infrastructure to scale up easily from day one. From email and account management with Google Workspace, right up to releasing hundreds of microservices and AI functionalities, we are confident that our growth will continue to be supported long into the future."
—Serban Chiricescu, Co-Founder and CTO, FlowX.AI"Google Cloud really paved the way for us to scale up, especially in those crucial early days," shares Chiricescu. "Between managing emails with Google Workspace and deploying a myriad of microservices and AI features, we're optimistic about our sustained growth well into the future."
