Building on its team’s decades of experience in data security breach management and having developed a market-leading proprietary cyber security platform, UK-based Logflare provides digital asset protection to enterprise IT providers. Founded in 2015, the company has spent two years perfecting its platform to protect small and medium businesses at an affordable price. As the platform evolved, it started to come up against the natural limits of Logflare’s infrastructure. In the search for a faster, more flexible, more efficient solution, it turned to Google Cloud.

“We needed a fully scalable, cost effective and programmable solution for our cloud platform,” says Alistair Baker, Founder and Executive Chairman at Logflare. “We ingest, store and re-reference very high volumes of data, and Google Cloud specifically helped on IOPS workload compared to our previous solution. We were also exploiting Google Cloud automation, which is key to deploying and managing at scale.”

“Google’s global presence is absolutely fundamental for us. There are so many issues around where your data resides. The fact that you can have your data either in country or in region where there are the appropriate legislative regulatory controls, is crucial for us and our customers.”

Alistair Baker, Founder and Executive Chairman, Logflare

Easy to use, hard to beat

With the UK’s General Data Protection Regulation taking effect in 2018 and regulations tightening around the world, data security has never been more important. Cyber security solutions need to be able to take in, integrate and analyze vast amounts of data and reach insights in very short spaces of time, making a high performing, reliable infrastructure vital. In addition, with its focus on mid-level enterprises, Logflare needed the ability to scale up and down and keep costs to a minimum. As its business and platform started to expand, the company began to look for ways of improving its existing infrastructure and go beyond the capabilities it already had.

In Spring 2016, Logflare trialed Google Cloud. The trial went so well and so quickly that within a few hours, the company had its first instances up and running on Google Compute Engine. Shortly afterwards, within an afternoon, Logflare began a full migration of its infrastructure. With Compute Engine, Logflare easily ran its instances on CentOS and added all the necessary libraries for its platform. With its instances on SSD, Logflare was able to keep its disk operations running with a very high IOPS workload, while Google Stackdriver proved a powerful, easy to use management platform. In addition to Google Cloud, easy integration with products like Google Safe Browsing APIs and Google Maps added more features to Logflare’s platform while Google Charts helped turn complex information into clear insights.

“Stackdriver was very significant for us. It’s an incredibly powerful management platform that was available out of the box versus having to author and deploy a home grown management platform which would have taken a lot of resources including time and money and been difficult to maintain,” says Alistair.

“Google's a big brand and it has invested accordingly in their compliance and security certification over the years. For a startup like ourselves to do all that is prohibitively expensive. For Logflare to comply with these standards, we would have had to spend a significant proportion of our initial funding on compliance. We've inherited high quality security from Google, and so there’s a big comfort factor for our customers.”

Cutting costs, providing peace of mind

Google Cloud's combination of high performance and flexible billing has helped Logflare gain around 25% of clear value from a price/performance perspective. Google’s REST API access model allows the company to automate the provisioning and management of new servers, while its clear interface means that when Logflare needs to spin up new machines manually, it can do so at the touch of a button. Meanwhile, Google’s commitment to rigorous security standards across the world means that Logflare can relieve customers of their compliance concerns without extra expenditure or effort. Leveraging Google’s twelve Cloud Regions allows Logflare to keep data close to its customers and their regulatory environments wherever they might be in the world. As Google continues to adapt and expand its products, from its suite of machine learning tools to new automation tools, Logflare will continue exploring ways of optimizing its infrastructure and providing great security to its customers.

“Switching to Google Cloud was a no-brainer with features like Stackdriver, the REST APIs and being able to programme the whole orchestration for provisioning, service delivery and operational management,” says Alistair. “We've been delighted ever since. It's a very robust, able platform. I can't remember having any outages or problems. It does the job exceedingly well.”
