By taking a customer-centred approach and providing access to the latest technology, Kinsta has become one of the fastest growing WordPress hosts in Europe and America. Over the last 12 months, Kinsta has grown its customer base by over 300% and revenue is four times what it was in 2015. As it sped its way to success, Kinsta began to feel the limits of its infrastructure provider. After an unplanned outage in late 2015, the company began looking for a new cloud-based infrastructure that could provide the scalability and reliability it needed. Kinsta chose Google Cloud Platform.

“We needed a more stable infrastructure after a massive outage. We looked at a few options and Google came out on top,” says Brian Jackson, Director of Inbound Marketing at Kinsta. “The pricing was better, we liked the performance, we liked the direction that we saw Google was heading. Plus, Google’s a big brand that everybody loves. We saw it as a great marketing partner.”

“We’ve just rolled out to all twelve Cloud Regions. We've been migrating a lot of clients to regions closer to them because it helps them dramatically reduce latency by being able to host their WordPress site closer to their visitors. For example, a lot of our Australian clients were in the Asia centre before and now they're moving down to Australia.”

Customizable infrastructure, global presence

Running a web-hosting service requires a rock solid infrastructure that can scale quickly without compromising on stability. With its rapid growth, Kinsta was straining against the limits of its existing Virtual Private Server (VPS) solution. Scaling at speed was difficult and Kinsta’s support teams spent valuable time and resources on backend issues instead of individual customer needs. On Christmas Day, 2015, Kinsta’s infrastructure provider suffered a massive DDOS attack that resulted in extended periods of downtime for the company and its customers. For Kinsta, this was unacceptable and it set out to find a stable infrastructure that could support its customers’ needs well into the future.

After evaluating its options, Kinsta began migrating its infrastructure to Google Cloud Platform in early 2016. Using Google Compute Engine’s features allowed Kinsta to scale up or down at speed to help ensure smooth performance for its customers. Compute Engine’s flexibility meant that Kinsta could create its own containers on each instance, allowing it to tweak the hosting environment and optimize customer experience. Meanwhile, Google’s per-minute billing and flexible pricing helped keep GCP within Kinsta’s price range. With customers all over the world, Kinsta was able to take advantage of Google’s global presence and over time, it rolled out instances across all twelve of Google’s Cloud Regions.

“With Compute Engine, there are far fewer limits compared to what we used to have,” says Mark Gavalda, Founder & CEO at Kinsta. “You can go really big. It can scale dramatically. Some of our clients have needed enormous resources in a very short space of time. GCP has been a huge help for that.”

“Compute Engine allows us to set up a separate container for each website, which is awesome and a whole new way of working for us. That’s a huge issue for privacy too. Everything’s separated and secure, which is important for our customers.”

Reliable, scalable, affordable

With its superior performance and flexible pricing, Google Cloud Platform helped Kinsta to cut costs compared with its previous infrastructure provider. Meanwhile, thanks to GCP’s stability and reliability, Kinsta’s customers have benefitted from a smoother service that can handle high levels of traffic. When an e-commerce customer was featured on a popular U.S. television program, its traffic spiked to over 1.2 million requests in a six hour period. With Compute Engine’s autoscaling features and some smart caching, Kinsta was able to keep the website running throughout the spike and reduce page-loading times by 50%. Just as Google continues to adapt and expand its products, Kinsta is exploring options such as integrating G Suite into its dashboard or Google Cloud CDN. With Google Cloud Platform, Kinsta can continue to deliver the same excellent service to its customer even as it grows to new heights.

“Google is one of the biggest innovators when it comes to cloud hosting and staying on the cutting edge of technology,” says Mark. “We hope as GCP platform evolves that we can roll out these new solutions to our clients.”
