Google Cloud integrations have helped the company improve resource management, streamline costs, and fast-track final deliveries, especially regarding data and analytics.

Google Cloud results

  • Offering customers solutions in real time
  • Daily processing capacity of nearly 2 TB on BigQuery
  • Around 210 million transactions a day with Cloud SQL
  • 12,000 active users on the company's platform
  • 180 million daily transactions of data access permission for users per day

Over 30 countries served with cloud support

Agriness is an agtech that uses data intelligence to drive the full productive potential of livestock production. The company began operating in 2001, in Florianopolis, with the release of its first technology solution to manage swine production units. Once the company consolidated its position in this segment in South America, its portfolio expanded to other production industries, such as poultry and dairy farming.

The company's desire to support livestock production on a global scale resulted in Agriness connecting with Cargill, a multinational from the food production and processing industry. In September 2018, a partnership between both companies resulted in the Agriness Platform, a management and data intelligence environment targeted at livestock production.

To address the livestock industry's demands for operation efficiency and to support producers and professionals on their digital journey, innovation is at the heart of the company's plan, based on unifying technologies, fostering a data-driven culture, and implementing management methods. As a result, Agriness decided to use cloud services to support its new platform aiming to provide a variety of solutions, speed, and faster response times.

However, in less than two years, the team realized it could not make the most of cloud-based technology with a traditional provider. That is when the agtech decided to reach out to Google Cloud.

"We changed to a cloud-based environment at that time, but we realized we needed a partner that would support us throughout the process. We wanted comprehensive support for the technical details. Other aspects that made us rethink the initial idea and consider migrating to Google Cloud involved costs, quality, and performance," explains André Peternela, Head of Engineering and IoT at Agriness.

Cloud solutions integration

Agriness already had Google Workspace productivity and collaboration resources in place. Coupled with the strategy of centralizing its platform's technology on Google Cloud, the partnership grew even stronger.

The migration was gradual. The company decided to migrate in 2020, and all stages were concluded within six months, by the end of that same year. From the first contact with Google Cloud teams until the beginning of testing, the company had access to specialized technical support.

From then on, the databases of the Agriness Platform's data lake started being managed through Cloud SQL, ensuring security, performance, and improved scalability and management options.

In addition, the solution could be easily integrated with BigQuery, which is used as a data warehouse and the main processing and management point for large data volumes. Consequently, it was possible to consolidate information and streamline data analyses and performance indicators for several purposes.

Tool integration continues with Cloud Logging, which manages records from Cloud SQL and Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE). This helps easily analyze issues with databases and internal components of GKE-based services. Many of the metrics provided by Cloud Logging are exported to the platform's monitoring service, installed in a Compute Engine virtual machine.

"Standardizing processes, which are centralized in the same environment, helps with performance. This allows us to distribute information in a more organized and agile way. Besides securing everyone's access to data, keeping knowledge under the team's control was extremely important. We got rid of some of the clutter and managed to streamline processes."

Resource optimization for global reach

The cloud has become a true ally for the company's technological evolution. Agriness is able to either alter or create new infrastructure development environments swiftly, using simple interfaces and in a few steps.

Infrastructure cost management—which used to be completely shattered, complex, and hard to access—is now monitored in real time, with a breakdown of expenses and an automated projection focused on the bottom line each month. This increases efficiency and optimizes investment.

Unifying the solutions into a single environment in Google Cloud helps improve the use of cloud resources and speed up final deliveries, especially regarding data and analytics. With the new infrastructure, Agriness can facilitate and fast-track service to the global market.

"Using Google Cloud's integrated resources and network products, the Agriness Platform has reached a global audience. Over 30 countries now have access to our products and services, providing customers with security and reliability."

André Peternela, Head of Engineering and IoT at Agriness

Numbers help paint a picture of this environment's potential: 2 TB of data is processed daily on BigQuery; 210 million transactions are performed every day on Cloud SQL databases; and 180 million daily transactions are performed to grant access to data with Identity and Access Management (IAM). The Agriness Platform currently has 12,000 active users.

Technology changes have strengthened business strategies. It is increasingly possible to offer real-time solutions to customers with alerts, diagnosis, and predictions that are accurate, reliable, and perform exceptionally well.

"Google Cloud supports us strategically in several business verticals, aiding and fast-tracking our global expansion plan. The third stage is underway, focusing on the use of artificial intelligence to help manage the livestock production chain."
