Supporting 100,000 platform users with zero downtime

Around two million university graduates search for jobs every year in India alone, and with only 200,000 job openings, it is often a challenge for graduates to gain employment.

"80% of graduates who get job opportunities often come from more central and known institutions due to the exposure given to them, and the ease of reach and access to such talent pools for the employer," explains Chinmay Kumar, Co-founder and Chief Enabler Officer at MyAnatomy.

Meanwhile, graduates from lesser-known institutions from tier two, three, and four cities and towns across India are missing out on these opportunities, and employers are finding it hard to identify, reach, attract, and recruit quality talent from these institutions.

"Having used Google Cloud for a while now, we've found the scalability and load balancing capabilities to be unrivaled. These elements are crucial to the growth of our platform."

Most of these institutions are located in semi-urban, rural areas, and smaller towns, so it becomes a struggle for employers to participate in on-campus recruitment events as they have to travel the extra mile. "We may not be born with equal talent, but we all deserve an equal opportunity to develop our talent," says Kumar.

Founded in 2018 and headquartered in Bangalore, India, MyAnatomy believes in providing a diverse and inclusive environment that promotes equal opportunity, develops talent, and fosters innovation and creativity.

MyAnatomy currently works on a hybrid cloud model, with its different products running on different cloud providers. However, the team is in the process of moving to Google Cloud managed services, where it is migrating all of its products to Google Cloud. "Having used Google Cloud for a while now, we've found the scalability and load balancing capabilities to be unrivaled. These elements are crucial to the growth of our platform."

Supporting high volumes of traffic with ease

Since the platform works with tertiary students and graduates, it found that there are peaks in traffic during certain times of the year, like the end of semester. As such, having a scalable platform is crucial to ensure that it can support the influx of users who are excited to find their next job.

The company's key product, the MyAnatomy Professional Intelligence Test (MAPIT), is an intelligence testing platform that helps employers sieve through a broad list of candidates according to their needs. "MAPIT is like a container, where employers can input their requirements or specific questions that are tailored to the roles they are looking to fill. Candidates then take the test, where the most suitable candidates are then selected for the next steps," explains Kumar.

Creating instance groups, a collection of VM instances on Compute Engine, MyAnatomy can operate applications like MAPIT without worrying about the load. The company also uses Firebase as its backend to maintain and support the infrastructure when there is a lot of traffic coming through. "Our traffic comes in peaks, and we rely on Firebase as our temporary storage service, using Google Cloud storage bucket as it has no limit on scalability, allowing us to scale our website quickly without worry," explains Nikhil Ajit Sadalgi, Director IT, at MyAnatomy. "Even when we have 100,000 concurrent users on our platform today, we do not face any problems," says Kumar, adding that with so many users, a few seconds of server downtime can be detrimental to the user experience.

The team also uses Cron Scheduler to schedule jobs, further automating processes so that engineers have more time to work on business-critical projects.

Reducing DevOps time on a single platform

The decision to move completely to Google Cloud was not made overnight. "Over the years we have learned to trust Google Cloud for its reliability," says Sadalgi. "Moving all our products onto one platform will minimize the effort, cost, and improve resource management as a whole." To support the full migration, MyAnatomy is working with Searce, a Google Cloud partner, to ensure a smooth transition.

"We love the documentation that Google Cloud provides. Our team can easily understand and learn the cloud fundamentals in their own time without any extensive training required."

The clear and comprehensible documentation has also been a plus point for MyAnatomy, as engineers can quickly learn and integrate new products. "We love the documentation that Google Cloud provides. Our team can easily understand and learn the cloud fundamentals in their own time without any extensive training required," adds Sadalgi.

This is in addition to the support that the Google Cloud team has provided, which stood out as compared to other cloud providers MyAnatomy worked with. "It is always easy to get help from the team when we need support and have our questions answered, which is something we really value," says Kumar, adding that the escalation resolution process has been a big help to the team to solve issues in a timely manner.

Leveraging AI to improve and innovate

As the company's Chief Enabler Officer, Kumar says he is always thinking of new ideas and ways to improve MyAnatomy. This includes delivering better and more efficient solutions to level the playing field for graduates, and providing the best pool of talents to organizations.

"We're currently focused on the techno management sector, but we are looking to expand to include other industries. With the strong capabilities of Google Cloud, I believe we are well placed for growth and further innovation."

"We are exploring Google Vision, alongside other AI tools that are available to improve our products," he says. "This includes tools to proctor candidates during writing tests, among other things."

Ultimately, Kumar says, the sky's the limit as to where MyAnatomy will go. "We're currently focused on the techno management sector, but we are looking to expand to include other industries. With the strong capabilities of Google Cloud, I believe we are well placed for growth and further innovation."
