Waste and recycling services are currently performed with static schedules without any visibility to actual needs. Furthermore, the operations and planning software including the in-vehicle computer systems in waste collection trucks tend to be costly, outdated and difficult to use. Enevo wanted to provide its customers with intuitive devices and software, while making it easy for its programmers to develop these tools. Traditionally, the user experience for enterprise devices and software isn’t as well designed as that of consumer products, and the company wanted a solution that challenged the status quo.

"As the world’s population increases and more waste is generated, we need to ensure waste collection is as efficient as possible. We use Android devices to develop modern tools and apps for our users. It helps us deliver a product that’s both intuitive and aesthetically pleasing… Google Maps is an essential part of the service we provide—forming the basis of user interaction with our product, and helps people quickly understand what is happening by giving them a live view of all activities.”
—Pirkka Palomäki, CTO, EnevoEnevo developed wireless smart sensors, placed in trash and recycling bins, to measure the level of their contents. The company’s cloud-based application uses this sensor data to calculate trends and predict when containers will be full. With the insights and reports, customers can right-size their operations and plan demand-driven routes for drivers. Enevo chose to develop this modern, sustainable system using Google Maps Platform because of its intuitive set-up and the customisable options they provide to developers. The company worked with Google Partner Mapspeople to develop a bespoke map solution within its web application to give customers a visual overview of operations. The map displays bins and containers in their precise locations, alongside detailed status information, such as fill-level. The application also tracks GPS traces from collection vehicles and provides drivers’ progress in real time. Enevo is an Android platform advocate, and provides Android-based tablets to help waste collection drivers access daily routes and tasks. This on-the-road solution allows drivers to send status updates, confirm when containers are emptied and report issues.
