On\n| April 14, 2025, support for\n| managed notebooks will end and the ability to create managed notebooks instances\n| will be removed. Existing instances will continue to function\n| but patches, updates, and upgrades won't be available. To continue using\n| Vertex AI Workbench, we recommend that you\n| [migrate\n| your managed notebooks instances to Vertex AI Workbench instances](/vertex-ai/docs/workbench/managed/migrate-to-instances).\n\n\u003cbr /\u003e\n\nVertex AI Workbench managed notebooks instances are\nGoogle-managed environments with integrations and\nfeatures that help you set up and work in\nan end-to-end notebook-based production environment.\nThis page describes how to upgrade the environment of\na managed notebooks instance.\n\nUpgrade methods\n---------------\n\nThere is one way to upgrade a managed notebooks instance:\n\n- **Manual upgrade** : If an existing managed notebooks instance meets the [requirements](#requirements) for upgrading, you can upgrade the instance manually.\n\nRequirements and limitations\n----------------------------\n\nBackward compatibility with your managed notebooks isn't\nguaranteed. [Make a copy of\nyour data](/vertex-ai/docs/general/troubleshooting-workbench#copy-user-data)\nbefore upgrading a managed notebooks instance.\n\nTo determine whether you can upgrade\na specific managed notebooks instance,\nsee the following requirements and limitations:\n\n- The Notebooks API must be\n\n [enabled in the instance's Google Cloud project](https://console.cloud.google.com/apis/library/notebooks.googleapis.com). For more information, see\n [List enabled services](/service-usage/docs/list-services#enabled) and\n [Enable an API](/endpoints/docs/openapi/enable-api#enabling_an_api).\n\n- After upgrading, an instance cannot be rolled back to the previous version.\n\n- Instances that are version M112 or earlier use Python 3.7, and therefore\n can't be upgraded to a more recent version than M112. This is because M112\n is the latest version to support Python 3.7.\n\nHow the upgrade works\n---------------------\n\nManaged notebooks instances are dual-disk, with\none boot disk and one data disk. The upgrade process upgrades the boot disk\nto a new image while preserving your data on the data disk.\n\n### Which components are upgraded\n\nThe following table shows which components of\nyour managed notebooks\ninstance are upgraded, which are preserved,\nand which need to be reinstalled.\n\nBefore you begin\n----------------\n\nBefore you upgrade, complete the following steps.\n\n1. Check the [release notes](/vertex-ai/docs/release-notes) to learn about\n updates to newer versions.\n\n2. [Make a copy of your data](/vertex-ai/docs/general/troubleshooting-workbench#copy-user-data)\n as a backup.\n\nCheck for a newer version of your instance's environment\n--------------------------------------------------------\n\nTo check whether a newer version of your instance's environment is available,\naccess your instance from the Google Cloud console.\n\n1. In the Google Cloud console, go to the **Managed notebooks** page.\n\n [Go to Managed notebooks](https://console.cloud.google.com/vertex-ai/workbench/managed)\n2. On the **Managed notebooks** tab, \"Upgrade available\" will appear in\n each upgradeable instance's row.\n There will also be a message at the top saying\n how many notebooks have available upgrades.\n\nUpgrade your instance's environment to a newer version\n------------------------------------------------------\n\nYou can manually upgrade a managed notebooks instance in\nthe Google Cloud console.\n| **Note:** Upgrades can affect user operations that are running.\n\n1. In the Google Cloud console, go to the **Managed notebooks** page.\n\n [Go to Managed notebooks](https://console.cloud.google.com/vertex-ai/workbench/managed)\n2. If the instances that you want to upgrade aren't running, [start the\n instances](/vertex-ai/docs/workbench/managed/create-managed-notebooks-instance-console-quickstart#start_your_instance).\n Vertex AI Workbench can only upgrade instances when\n they're running.\n\n3. If you want to upgrade all upgradeable\n managed notebooks instances,\n then on the **Managed notebooks** tab, in the message at the top\n of the page, click the **Upgrade all** button. If there\n is no message at the top, then there are no\n managed notebooks instances that can be upgraded.\n\n4. If you want to upgrade an individual notebook,\n then on the **Managed notebooks** tab, select\n the managed notebooks instance that\n you want to upgrade. There will be an \"Upgrade available\" message\n in the instance's row.\n\n5. Make sure you have [made a copy of the data on your\n instance](/vertex-ai/docs/general/troubleshooting-workbench#copy-user-data) before\n continuing.\n\n6. On the **Managed notebooks** tab, click\n **Upgrade**."]]
