This\nbest practice simplifies backup management and can improve the performance of\nbackups.\n\nBefore you begin\n----------------\n\nTo manage a backup, you must have access to the following:\n\n- The necessary identity and access roles:\n\n - Harbor Instance Admin: has full access to manage Harbor instances in a project. Ask your Organization IAM Admin to grant you the Harbor Instance Admin (`harbor-instance-admin`) role.\n - Secret Admin: required for operating in the GDC console. Ask your Organization IAM Admin to grant you the Secret Admin (`secret-admin`) role.\n- An existing backup. You create backups from the following sources:\n\n - GDC creates backups automatically as defined in the backup plan schedule. Sign in to the GDC console.\n2. In the navigation menu, click **Backup for harbor instance**.\n3. Click **Backups**.\n4. View existing backups in the table.\n5. To view the details of a single backup, click the name of the backup in the table.\n\nDelete a backup\n---------------\n\nBackups are deleted in two ways:\n\n- Backups are automatically deleted after the number of days in their backup plan retention policy is reached.\n- You delete backups manually.\n\nTo manually delete an existing backup, follow these steps:\n\n1. Sign in to the GDC console.\n2. In the navigation menu, click **Backup for harbor instance**.\n3. Click **Backups**.\n4. Click the name of the backup you want to delete.\n5. Click delete**Delete backup**.\n6. In the confirmation dialog, enter the name of the backup that is being deleted.\n7. Click **Delete backup**.\n\n| **Warning:** The delete operation can't be undone. The deletion of this backup permanently removes the backup and all of its data.
