Scales with over 28 million tracked loads per year

Supply chains are the backbone of our connected world, but they’re also its Achilles’ heel. Disruptions along the supply chain can bring businesses, and entire economies, to a grinding halt. That’s why real-time visibility into these processes is crucial for companies, no matter what their industry. But while 92% of executives agree that supply chain visibility is important for success, only 27% have actually achieved full visibility. That’s where Shippeo comes in.

Shippeo equips businesses with instant access to predictive information and real-time data on each delivery. For market-leading companies across seven industries, including retail, automotive, and manufacturing, Shippeo’s machine-learning ETA (estimated time of arrival) algorithm accurately calculates arrival times. This enables companies to anticipate problems as soon as they arise, remediate issues quickly, and deliver exceptional customer service.

"Shippeo is the first real-time transportation visibility platform offering an SLA on ETA accuracy, with 10 times greater accuracy than our closest competitor," says Daria Sainani, Head of Growth Marketing at Shippeo. "After our solutions are live, improvements come quickly. These could include a 20% to 30% decrease in penalties related to late arrivals or a 15% to 30% decrease in exceptional and urgent transport costs. Our customers tend to see a return on their investment of between 20% and 30% in less than a year."

"The more we grew, the more infrastructure and services we needed to add and manage ourselves, which wasn’t something we wanted to spend time on. We needed a scalable cloud platform that could handle vast amounts of data and support our growth. That’s what we found with Google Cloud."

Selecting Google Cloud for security and ease of use

Shippeo was built in the cloud from day one, but soon outgrew its initial cloud provider. Ensuring ETA accuracy across millions of shipments around the world requires a robust data pipeline that’s not prone to bottlenecks, and infrastructure that scales effortlessly.

"The more we grew, the more infrastructure and services we needed to add and manage ourselves, which wasn’t something we wanted to spend time on," says Sainani. "We needed a scalable cloud platform that could handle vast amounts of data and support our growth. That’s what we found with Google Cloud."

Initially, Shippeo used a proof of concept to compare cloud providers. Around the same time, the Shippeo team started using Google Workspace for seamless collaboration, making Google Cloud an attractive combination of ease and security: "Because we handle sensitive data, authentication is crucial for us, and we need to ensure that everyone has precisely the right levels of access," says Khaled Lamrani, Head of Engineering, Shippeo. "With other providers, this would have been a lot of work, but combining Google Cloud and Google Workspace enabled us to use these authentication standards out-of-the-box."

Delivering real-time insights, one event at a time

At its heart, the Shippeo platform is driven by events. A truck heads out with a load, that’s an event. There’s a delay on the road or the shipment arrives right on time, both are events. Altogether, it adds up to millions of events, all processed asynchronously. This event-driven architecture, in which microservices quickly react to change, is scalable by design. But it needs an infrastructure to match.

Today, Google Kubernetes Engine sits at the heart of Shippeo’s event-driven platform, orchestrating its container-based workloads with effortless scalability. "Google Kubernetes Engine gives us complete peace of mind, especially as we grow and add new customers," says Lamrani. "If there’s a surge of events in the morning, we can rest assured our platform is handling it without issues."

Faster deployments, stronger SLAs

Along the supply chain, even small issues can carry a huge price tag, which is why Shippeo’s customers expect excellent reliability. "Our solution is mission-critical for our customers, which is why our ability to enforce our SLAs can make or break our business," says Lamrani. "With previous providers, we didn’t always have that reliability. Since moving to Google Cloud, we can grow Shippeo while making sure we can enforce our SLAs."

As a fast-growing company, Shippeo needs to deliver features and upgrades ever more quickly. With Google Cloud, the team can deploy new features faster than ever before and release updates with rolling integrations, without the downtimes or manual steps that were necessary in the past.

"With Google Cloud, we’ve been able to automate time-consuming maintenance tasks, and roll out code continuously, with one click in any environment," says Lamrani. "We’ve decreased the time we’ve been preparing each release by 30% and increased our deployment speed by 200%. This helps us deliver new features, updates, and performance improvements faster."

Upping transparency, reducing costs

Shippeo is all about visibility, and BigQuery helps the company make supply chain data available to customers with near real-time speeds. BigQuery processes and stores the vast amounts of data generated from events around the world and feeds them into intuitive analytics dashboards. Here, companies can get crucial insights into what’s happening along their supply chains, whether that’s a delay in delivery or a shortage of material.

Internally, visibility is a key metric for the Shippeo team to measure the health and security of the platform, and to keep costs down. The observability of Google Cloud enables the team to streamline operations and discover efficiencies. "Before Google Cloud, we simply had a global cost, that was it," says Lamrani. "It was difficult to optimize. With Google Cloud, we have complete transparency over our cloud spend, which helps us to reduce costs as we grow."

Powering real-time visibility with a Digital Supply Chain Twin

Today, Shippeo tracks more than 28 million loads per year across 75 countries, having achieved a 103% year-on-year growth in subscription revenues and a 181% net retention rate. Meanwhile, Shippeo has more than doubled its staff year-on-year. And with exciting innovations on the horizon, there’s no end in sight.

"Shippeo is a fast-growing company, and Google Cloud has empowered us to scale for growth without having to worry about infrastructure bottlenecks we’ve experienced in the past. We’re excited to take our collaboration to the next level with the Digital Supply Chain Twin initiative, and innovate supply chain visibility together."

Khaled Lamrani, Head of Engineering, Shippeo

Now, the Shippeo team wants to take its dedication to visibility a step further by helping Google Cloud power real-time visibility for its new Digital Supply Chain Twin solution. The solution pulls and unifies data from multiple systems to create a ‘digital twin’ of the physical supply chain. By integrating Shippeo’s capabilities into the Supply Chain Twin, joint customers will be able to leverage big data capabilities autonomously.

"Our customers want to analyze and enrich their data themselves, but they often lack the big data capabilities to do so," says Lamrani. "With the Supply Chain Twin, they can get real-time visibility into all of their supply chain systems, even those outside Shippeo, and derive insights by themselves. That’s why we’re so proud to be part of this initiative."

As the need for smarter supply chains becomes increasingly urgent, the Shippeo team has their work cut out for them. And today, they can count on the right infrastructure to match their ambitions: "Shippeo is a fast-growing company, and Google Cloud has empowered us to scale for growth without having to worry about infrastructure bottlenecks we’ve experienced in the past," says Lamrani. "We’re excited to take our collaboration to the next level with the Digital Supply Chain Twin initiative, and innovate supply chain visibility together."
