Manage the discovery client

This page describes how to edit the details of your discovery client, and how to delete and uninstall the discovery client after you complete your data collection.

View and edit the discovery client information

You can review detailed information about your discovery client installations and edit them in Google Cloud console.

To view your clients, follow these steps:

  1. In the Google Cloud console, go to the Data import page.

    Go to Data import

  2. Under Scans, click the name of the discovery client for which you want to view and edit the details.

To edit the discovery client's information, on the details page for your client, click Edit.

Review the status of the discovery client

To review the status of your discovery client, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Data import page, then click Scans.
  2. In the Status column, view the status of your discovery client.

The following section shows the possible statuses for the discovery client.

List of statuses

  • Initializing. Migration Center is creating the discovery client.
  • Ready to use. Your discovery client is ready, and you can download it and install it.
  • Install started. You're installing the discovery client, but you have not registered it yet.
  • Registered. You have registered the discovery client correctly, and the discovery client is connected with Migration Center.
  • Active. Your discovery client is collecting data.
  • Paused. Your discovery client is not collecting data.

Review the error details

If you encounter errors while collecting data with your discovery client, you can review the error message directly in the Google Cloud console.

To review the errors, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Data import page, then click Scans.
  2. In the Error column, click View. The Errors detail page shows the complete list of errors.

On the Errors detail page, you can review the assets and data fields that cause the errors, and view a description of the error. Errors in the client collection might prevent Migration Center from creating new assets or update existing ones with the new changes.

Temporarily stop data collection

You can temporarily stop collecting data with discovery client by pausing it.

To pause data collection, do the following:

  1. In the Google Cloud console, go to the Data import page.

    Go to Data import

  2. In the Scans tab, select the clients that you want to pause, then click Pause. Your collector stops collecting data from your infrastructure.

To resume data collection, select the collectors you want to resume, then click Resume.

Permanently stop data collection

After you complete your data collection, you can delete and uninstall the discovery client. Deleting the client from Migration Center stops any existing data collection on your infrastructure and interrupts any data transfer between the discovery client and Migration Center. Removing the discovery client also reverts all of the data reported by the client.

To delete a discovery client, do the following:

  1. In the Google Cloud console, go to the Data import page.

    Go to Data import

  2. In the Scans tab, select the clients that you want to delete, then click Delete.

  3. In the confirmation dialog, click Confirm.

Manage analytics data collection

The discovery client can collect usage data and other anonymized data that helps Google improve the product. If you agree to send analytics data to Google, the events and statistics that the discovery client collects might include the following:

  • Activation events in online mode
  • Activation events in offline mode
  • Switch from offline to online mode
  • Collection statistics at regular intervals of an hour, including the status of the discovery client (for example if it is active but not collecting, if it is collecting, or expired)
  • Number of assets collected at regular intervals of 24 hours
  • Number of errors with the assets at regular intervals of 24 hours, and when the collection starts
  • Failed activation events
  • Failed connectivity checks at regular intervals of 24 hours

For all events, the discovery client provides information on the activation status and current version of the application.

To manage the discovery client analytics collection, follow these steps:

  1. In the discovery client application, go to Settings.
  2. In the Help improve Migration Center section, toggle if you want to enable or disable analytics data collection.
