About Dinasur

Google Cloud Partner Dinasur aims to improve productivity for its customers with the help of Google Cloud solutions.

BBVA turned to Google Maps Platform to provide advanced geospatial intelligence for its apps so its customers can track their spending, increase security, and discover more about their purchase patterns.

Results:

  • Allows BBVA customers to track their banking activity on Google Maps, so they can see exactly where transactions have taken place
  • Google Maps Platform transaction information helps increase the security for customers
  • Google Maps Platform geolocation services provide BBVA customers with extra information on places they’ve been, which they can share

Uses Places API data to enhance the financial customer experiences

How we pay for goods and services is changing. Cash transactions are declining, while digital payments are increasingly becoming the norm. Those who hadn’t moved to contactless payments quickly grasped its benefits in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, 2020 saw a global surge in payments made using digital technologies. These habits, however long established, are here to stay. And many key players in the financial services sector are banking on the future of money being digital.

This global trend is a pattern mirrored by consumer behaviour in Spain, card payments in the country are predicted to grow by 11.4% in 2022. Banking and financial services group BBVA has always embraced innovation, and is giving its Spanish customers more ways to bank digitally. The growth of BBVA mobile payments increased exponentially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Three years ago it was 4.4% of the bank’s customers, and now it’s 23%.

As part of BBVA’s wider digital transformation journey powered by Google Cloud, it’s using technology to ensure that it continues to offer customers an exceptional range of services, as well as a great banking experience. BBVA wants to give its customers not only what they want, but what they didn’t even know was possible. It was already using Google Maps Platform to help customers find their nearest branch or ATM locations and it was keen to further leverage the potential of Google Maps Platform solutions.

"BBVA is always looking for ways to use technology for the benefit of its customers. When it came to the challenge of providing geolocated insights into spending in an increasingly contactless world, we incorporated Google Maps Platform to provide us with the best in class capabilities that we needed."

Providing greater clarity on spending

BBVA’s mobile banking app is used by 71% of our customers in Spain, and is accessed more than 120 million times a month. With the goal to offer a better financial experience for digital customers, BBVA wanted to provide more information about each customer transaction. For example, we’ve all checked our bank statements and spotted a purchase that we can’t quite place. BBVA realized that providing contextual, geolocated information could help customers understand their spending and guard against fraudulent activity on their account.

Through the BBVA app, customers can now pinpoint the exact location and address of their spending on a Google Map, alongside the essential information they need, such as the amount, time, and date of the purchase. And, by clicking on the ‘more information’ option, they can bring up further details about the business including pictures, a link to its website, contact information, opening hours, and customer reviews.

This approach benefits BBVA and its customers. If a customer is still unsure about a transaction, perhaps believing that they have been charged the incorrect amount, they are now able to access all of the information they need to resolve the situation directly with the establishment. That’s likely to lead to a faster resolution for the customer. And, there’s a social element at play here too. By checking on a bill from a restaurant you visited, for example, you might remember what a great experience you had and decide to share the details with your friends and family.

“It’s important that we give our customers as much information as possible,” adds Navarrete. “Google Maps Platform allows customers to have all the information about their movements to get a complete vision on their spend.”

Increasing security

Another area where geolocation information helps customers and BBVA is increasing security. Text message scams and other criminal operations that aim to defraud banking customers are on the rise across many nations. And the situation in Spain led to the Spanish National Police issuing a public awareness campaign about some of the methods used in August 2021.

By providing customers with more transaction details, BBVA is helping its customers to prevent fraud. If a customer is quickly able to see that a transaction has been made in a place that they have never visited, this will help them to identify potential fraudulent activity and empower BBVA to act in response.

This geolocated information about the customer also helps BBVA to spot signs of unusual activity, which could potentially be a sign of fraud. If a customer suddenly starts spending large amounts of money in an area they don’t usually frequent, for example, this could warrant further investigation. “When it comes to detecting and preventing fraud, location data adds an extra dimension to our efforts,” says Navarrete. “Knowing more about where our customers spend allows us to spot unusual movements that could help alert customers to fraudulent activity.”

Looking to the future

Navarrete and his team worked with Dinasur to leverage its deep knowledge of Google Maps Platform APIs, to ensure that they could achieve their goals. And, another benefit of this approach was to gain insight into all of the latest features available with Google Cloud and Google Maps Platform.

One of the big benefits Navarrete experienced during this project is the ease with which his engineers have been able to get to grips with Google Maps Platform APIs. He and his team are currently using Maps JavaScript API, Maps SDK for Android, and Places API, as well as Place Autocomplete and Geocoding API. “It’s very easy to introduce our developers to the suite of APIs on Google Maps Platform,” adds Navarrete. “All of our developers get to know them very quickly. And that’s really key to getting our work done today while anticipating and addressing the needs of tomorrow.”

BBVA strives to constantly innovate and improve its services. The bank is working with Google Maps Platform to offer more innovative services to its customers. For example, BBVA is now working on a simpler visualization of personal financial management that everyone can understand: a map of payments. This would enable customers to track their transactions’ locations, categories, and amounts all on one screen. Just imagine your last trip to London and being able to see all your expenses summarized on a user-friendly map. Another new feature that BBVA is developing involves offering promotions to customers based on their geolocated habits. This could include suggesting shopping alternatives to customers near their home or work, or hotel when a customer makes a transaction on holiday. These additional features also boost the social elements of the app, as people can share pictures and information about that great hotel or restaurant from their London trip. As the way we bank changes, BBVA’s collaboration with Google Maps Platform continues to map out an exciting future.
