WESSLING uses Google Cloud VMware Engine with the help of Devoteam to reduce IT management and maintenance demands while dramatically improving speed, efficiency, and performance.
Devoteam provided the expertise to see the benefits of Google Cloud VMware Engine. They made the migration fast and easy and provided an invaluable knowledge transfer to ensure we can manage our infrastructure going forward.

WESSLING used on-prem VMware vCenter infrastructure that resulted in data center outages and was unable to support its growing business. At the same time, the company lacked the internal knowledge and expertise to migrate and manage its VMs to the cloud.
To address the challenges, WESSLING chose to work with partner Devoteam, with the goal of migrating its entire VM infrastructure to Google Cloud VMware Engine (GCVE). Everyday management of GCVE is virtually identical to managing the previous VM environment, making it the best possible fit for WESSLING.
Devoteam helped WESSLING navigate the migration to Google Cloud. The partner worked to understand the priorities of WESSLING and create a three-phase migration strategy that focused first on the easiest VMs with the fewest application dependencies. The final phase involved migrating VMs supporting the company’s most complex, business-critical applications.
WESSLING also set out to revamp its disaster recovery (DR) to ensure faster, more reliable recovery in the event of an outage. Devoteam recommended Google Cloud native backup and DR along with the GCVE Terraform Module. This enables WESSLING to deploy clusters in other regions automatically if its primary region goes down. Now, GCVE cluster setup takes between one and two hours, while restoration of a single VM takes between three to five minutes.
As a final step, WESSLING, which has used Citrix on-prem for years, tapped Devoteam to redeploy the environment on Google Compute Engine.
WESSLING now has a more agile, modern VM environment in the cloud. Nodes from Google Cloud VMware Engine outperform on-prem infrastructure of WESSLING, particularly in terms of latency for the company’s most important applications.
For example, Lobster Servers—a vital platform for many laboratory companies including WESSLING—previously ran on-prem and were isolated for security reasons. When users would need to connect to Lobster through the internet, slow latency impacted employee productivity. Now, the Lobster Servers of WESSLING run on GCVE, where latency is extremely low. Further, WESSLING can have many more simultaneous interactions today.
Overall, proven Google Cloud networking practices have improved the IT efficiency of WESSLING. Devoteam pointed out that Google Cloud DNS resolution is far easier than previous DNS resolutions. Since GCVE delivers a deeply cloud-integrated VMware experience, services like Cloud DNS work seamlessly. The result is fewer network challenges and less downtime.
Moving to Google Cloud VMware Engine greatly improved performance. From the start, our users commented that their machines were faster. With Google Cloud and Devoteam’s support, we better support our users with smoother, faster IT services.

The fully managed GCVE reduces strain on the busy WESSLING IT team, enabling them to focus on high-value, strategic tasks. When problems arise, they can fix them about 50 percent faster.
The WESSLING team also values the more predictable pricing and improved security offered by GCVE. Through its Looker Studio dashboard, WESSLING can also evaluate cost sharing between entities. With the solution, they take advantage of security best practices implemented within the larger Google Cloud environment, as well as within GCVE.
Devoteam reviewed the approach to security after implementation to help ensure optimal protections across the environment. The WESSLING team noted Devoteam’s exceptional Google Cloud knowledge as they worked together to enable the company to benefit from all the features and tools in its new architecture.
Looking ahead, WESSLING plans to redeploy its core Citrix farm in Google Compute Engine.
