Banlinea is a Colombian company specialized in digital transformation and online sale of financial products. Its purpose is to change people's lives by helping them to make better financial decisions. To this end, it uses digital tools to understand users' behaviors. The Banlinea team is composed of over 60 employees working in Bogota and Mexico City offices, providing services across Latin America.

Connect, one of the apps developed by Banlinea, takes the products offered by financial entities to a digital environment that is closer and more friendly for customers, who now have the opportunity to avoid visiting physical branches or standing in long queues. With Connect, customers can make purchases, requests, registrations or any other type of transaction in a 100% digital channel. Remote processes are used for identity validation, credit checks and data linking so as to collect all data to define, in real time, whether a product may be granted to a customer or not.

Searching for robust technologies to leverage data

In order to render these services, it was critical for Banlinea to get a robust infrastructure that provided the security and certifications needed to bring peace of mind to its customers, as well as the possibility to scale products globally. It also required new data analysis tools to detect patterns from people's behaviors that help to develop products that satisfy their financial needs.

Moreover, the company needed a technology not limited to a single type or brand, allowing for versatility, capacity and scalability regardless of the increasing number of (simultaneous) customers. Business challenges included quick responsiveness in the development of its products, timely delivery of information and, last but not least, a high level of security.

Banlinea's journey to transformation

From the beginning of the process required to adopt the new platform, Banlinea was supported by Google's team in all challenges related to embracing a new technology, providing simplified information and customized advice.

Since deployment, Banlinea has used virtualized servers, mailing, storage and monitoring services, containers and non-relational data. Due to support issues, Google Cloud turned out to be a non-restrictive, flexible technology to use different databases.

Moreover, this platform allowed for big data analysis and machine learning applied to such databases, leading to accurate information on user behavior. Google Kubernetes Engine allowed for the development of different microservices to meet a variety of business needs.

Cloud benefits

Nowadays, Banlinea processes approximately 2,000 daily transactions, with a team of up to 30 developers working on 6 or 7 projects simultaneously and only 1 infrastructure administrator. In the past, with other technologies, this proved impossible. The operations area of the company has seen the largest benefits from Google's cloud technology: it does not rely on a physical, on-premise infrastructure, as everything runs on the cloud. This has enabled the company to work from different locations and offer its services with no physical constraints.

Banlinea has also reduced costs by 31.7% thanks to Google Cloud. If this technology did not exist, they would have to resort to high investment in physical infrastructure and management.
