The new way to manage safety for a global energy leader
Wasco Berhad is a Malaysian energy and infrastructure group with operations in 13 countries, corrosion protection, engineering and fabrication, and EPC project delivery, and renewable-thermal solutions across both traditional and renewable sectors. The Group’s long-term ambition is clear: lead regional growth in low-carbon energy while progressing towards its net-zero commitments with the use of data and AI.
Across it’s global plants and yards, safety has always been a non-negotiable priority. Employees regularly submit “Care Cards” — on-site safety observations that reflect Wasco’s strong culture of prevention and accountability. But for years, these insights lived in paper forms and isolated spreadsheets, making it difficult for the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) team to track trends or close the loop quickly.
Digitization into a System of Record helped streamline the process, but it introduced a new challenge: volume.Thousands of cards were submitted each month, each containing free-form text in multiple languages. Analyzing them manually for global trends was impossible. The HSE team needed a solution that could unify data from every region and provide insights at scale.
Why Google Cloud?
To solve this, Wasco turned to Google Cloud partner, Cloud Space, to modernize safety analytics and apply AI to one of the company’s most vital responsibilities — protecting its people.
With the partnership in place, Wasco began its data modernization journey by building an enterprise data warehouse on BigQuery. This centralized all Care Card data across its global operations, allowing the HSE team to perform large-scale analytics on previously siloed information.
Before BigQuery, safety managers had to extract and merge reports from multiple systems and regions — a process that took days or even weeks. Now, data ingestion, transformation, and analysis happen in near real time. Managers can identify recurring issues, compare performance across sites, and assess the impact of safety initiatives through dashboards powered by BigQuery.
The amount of time to set up, the cost to implement, and even the speed of handling data impressed us. BigQuery became the cornerstone of our digital transformation.

Applying AI with Google Cloud to protect lives
With its data foundation in place, Wasco extended its capabilities using AI with Google Cloud, powered by Vertex AI and Gemini. The group now runs advanced analytics on thousands of Care Cards — extracting key risks, identifying patterns, and predicting potential incidents before they occur. With these analysis, AI is providing mitigation recommendations accordingly.
AI helps us see patterns that were previously invisible. It gives our global management team timely insight and the ability to take preventive action — ultimately helping us save lives and costs.

Previously, analyzing freeform text was slow and inconsistent. Now, AI models read and categorize each card automatically, regardless of language or structure. They highlight recurring hazards, rank them by severity, and even recommend preventive actions. Handwritten notes from physical cards are digitized through intelligent document processing, ensuring that every observation, even from sites where mobile devices are restricted, is captured and analyzed.
By automating these tasks, Wasco has saved thousands of man-hours and significantly improved the speed and accuracy and consistency of safety reporting.
More importantly, business leaders now gain timely visibility into emerging risks, data-driven decisions that help prevent incidents and protect workers across the company’s global operations.
Paving the way for continuous innovation
Wasco’s AI and data transformation was achieved with Cloud Space providing end-to-end support across cloud infrastructure, data pipelines, and AI implementation.
The partnership remains dynamic, with both teams continuously exploring new advancements such as agent-based automation and predictive ESG reporting.
For Wasco, innovation doesn’t stop with safety. The company now plans to expand its AI and Google Cloud capabilities to sustainability efforts, including monitoring carbon sequestration and biodiversity data for its Wasco Forest initiative, a long term nature restoration program dedicated to planting one million trees in Malaysia, which complements the Group’s broader emissions reduction strategy.. By automating data collection and analysis, Wasco aims to track environmental impact with the same precision it brings to safety.
