By connecting shopping lists with real-time in-store data, the Ubamarket app makes grocery shopping easier, faster and a better value for customers while boosting revenue for supermarkets. Rearranging shopping lists to provide the best route through a store, helping users avoid checkout queues with scan-as-you-shop technology and automatically offering the best deals and loyalty bonuses, Ubamarket is a “magic shopping list” according to its CEO and founder Will Broome. After a successful year trialing the app in a UK supermarket and featuring in a BBC documentary, Ubamarket is set to launch in three more stores and is in talks with several leading supermarket brands throughout the world. Back in 2015, Ubamarket turned to retail technology specialists DMI to help turn its vision for a better in-store experience into reality. To do that, DMI and Ubamarket chose to build on Google Cloud Platform(GCP).

“For the infrastructure, the main criteria for me was absolute trust in the brand providing it,” says Will. “We look after huge amounts of data and product files from different retailers, so the mechanics behind everything needs to be in the most secure, robust, trusted solution imaginable. For us that was Google.”

Scaling at speed with Google App Engine

After extensive market research, Ubamarket knew that it had to solve a number of problems to be successful. It needed to dynamically process stock and location data about in-store items, scan barcodes, and integrate a store’s payments and loyalty systems. In addition, Ubamarket planned for rapid expansion and a global presence, so it needed an infrastructure that could scale at speed without compromising on performance or security.

With over ten years experience with UK retailers, DMI was clear that Google Cloud Platform was the right solution for Ubamarket. With Google App Engine at its core, the company could build and scale its infrastructure quickly without needing to spend time and resources installing and configuring on-premises hardware. Using Google Cloud Datastore, Ubamarket set up its databases easily, automating encryption and backups and providing the ability to scale without disruption or installing additional hardware. As more and more data comes in, Ubamarket has turned to Google BigQuery to go beyond analyzing just spending habits and can now gain insights into customer behaviour as well.

With Google Cloud Platform at its heart, Ubamarket’s year-long trial was an unequivocal success that saw customer basket sizes grow by 21%. Meanwhile, Google App Engine’s ease of use and lack of management means that the company can scale with ease without spending valuable resources on DevOps. Google’s flexible pricing ensured that the company could build an infrastructure appropriate to its needs at the start of its journey and scale up affordably when it needed to. With DMI’s continued involvement, Ubamarket is constantly looking for ways to improve its platform, whether it’s using Google Analytics on Firebase and Google BigQuery to provide more insight or Google Firebase messaging to send push notifications to app-users.
