Siemens Energy works with Atos to migrate its highly complex SAP ECC environment onto Google Cloud for greater reliability and cost-efficiency.

Keeping energy pipelines running

With Atos on our side, migrating to SAP on Google Cloud went smoothly. The migration was so seamless that I didn't always realize when a system moved to Google Cloud.

Matthias Henneberger

Head of IT Value Center ERP, Siemens Energy

Siemens Energy employees are proud to support the fast-growing needs for energy around the world. The technology team responsible for essential cybersecurity, data analytics, and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems understands that their contributions help keep factory production, supply chains, and other core business activities running smoothly. By preventing business disruptions, they accelerate customer access to the energy technologies they need.

As a large global enterprise, Siemens Energy had a complex SAP environment with 16 SAP ECC application landscapes managed by multiple vendors. The IT team set out to reduce costs by consolidating the SAP ECC application landscapes to one vendor.

Google Cloud partner Atos provided the SAP expertise required to manage a large, complex environment.

Siemens Energy's IT team and Atos took this opportunity to migrate the SAP ECC applications from on-premises to Google Cloud. While scalability and performance were a factor, Siemens Energy was also excited about the potential of using native Google Cloud capabilities, including AI, to bring more innovations to the ERP landscape.

Innovation, security, and stability in the cloud

Atos now manages the full SAP stack on Google Cloud, and implemented the BlueBox tool to automate SAP technical management (SAP Basis) across the landscape on Google Cloud. Siemens Energy also introduced RISE with SAP on Google Cloud in one of its factories with plans to roll out to all locations.

After all previous ERP providers handed over responsibility, Atos supported the migration from the on-premises data center onto Google Cloud. Atos worked closely with the Siemens Energy cybersecurity team and recommended updated security architecture in coordination with Google Cloud, leveraging existing Atos tools related to SAP application management. Google Cloud Security Command Center is used for alerts alongside other tools to meet Siemens Energy's unique security requirements.

We had excellent technical support from both partners. Atos brought a high level of engagement to sort out our complex environment, while technical experts from Google Cloud were always on hand to help solve any problems.

Kathryn Warner

Project Lead for SAP ECC to Cloud, Siemens Energy

The biggest challenge for the migration was handling the complex network of hundreds of integrations with SAP ECC without experiencing downtime. Atos was up to the challenge, working closely with Google Cloud teams when technical advice was needed. After six months of planning and a successful pilot launch, Atos rolled out the migration of 274 servers with 16 SAP ECC landscapes and 60 systems in just 18 months.

Siemens Energy has already seen significant cost savings at the application level. Google Cloud helps to increase reliability. Consolidating all application services at a single vendor frees up internal resources to focus on innovations that support growth. Siemens Energy made the switch to SAP HANA during the migration of its SAP ECC system in Brazil, while the company already leverages SAP HANA for 15 other SAP ECC systems.

Siemens Energy is now exploring other services on Google Cloud, particularly around data analytics capabilities. Connecting SAP Datasphere to BigQuery and working with the Google Cloud Cortex Framework are just some ways that Siemens Energy could bring more analytics into factories. Such technologies can boost productivity and support the company's goal of bringing reliable, affordable, and more sustainable energy to the world.
