A governance, risk, and compliance platform’s migration to Google Cloud increased data security and simplified network management.

Taking no risks with risk management

“High-risk, high-reward” may be the mantra among certain high-flying investors and gamblers with money to burn.

But for large enterprises in highly regulated industries — think finance, healthcare, consumer packaged goods, and energy — “risk” is part of “governance, risk, and compliance,” or GRC. It’s something to be managed and minimized to keep products and consumers safe, and companies in line with laws that carry stiff penalties when not followed to the letter.

Every company has its own, distinct GRC workflows and strategies — intricate, carefully honed, and updated frequently. SAI360’s platform helps make those strategies successful.

“Our software’s ability to handle any level of complexity and adapt to any strategy or workflow makes it unique,” says Eric Fouarge, SAI360’s global head of engineering for cloud operations.

The relationship with our previous cloud provider felt transactional, but Google is more than a cloud vendor — it’s a true partner.

Fouarge oversees the IT infrastructure underlying SAI360’s products and ensures customers’ expectations for a flexible, reliable platform are met. But his existing cloud-based technology was making it increasingly difficult to do so.

“As our tech stack grew to accommodate new platform features, we were hampered by the complexity inherent in how our cloud provider handled networking,” Fouarge concedes, “and they weren’t working with us to solve those problems.”

Needing to accelerate product development, and with a modernization project for legacy application stacks looming, he migrated SAI360’s infrastructure to Google Cloud.

“Our Google team ensured a smooth migration, and even when we encountered unexpected network complexity issues, they solved the puzzle in a day or two,” he recalls. “The relationship with our previous cloud provider felt transactional, but Google is more than a cloud vendor — it’s a true partner.”

Out-of-the-box security and significant cost savings

Security is important for every company, but when your business is a platform for managing risk, it’s more than mission-critical: It’s the basis of your credibility. “Google Cloud is secure right out of the box,” Fouarge states. “The migration drastically simplified security and compliance management even while increasing our data security posture.”

For example, the government agencies, healthcare organizations, and financial institutions among SAI360’s customers have strict data residency requirements; Google was able to accommodate all of them.

Google Cloud is also more cost-effective: “We’re seeing an across-the-board cost reduction of nearly 35% on our cloud spend, especially in compute costs,” Fourage reports, “and a 15% reduction in storage costs alone.” The seamless integration among Google Cloud applications is also streamlining IT management tasks like network architecting, permissioning, access management, and data migration.

And the migration itself rolled out quickly: Three days after enabling SAI360’s Google Cloud account, Fouarge was already moving workloads off his previous platform to the Compute Engine and Google Cloud VMware Engine (GCVE). “The ability to scale the clusters incrementally and pay on-demand for the resources is a cost-saving game-changer,” he adds.

To augment his own team with Google-specific expertise during and after the migration, SAI360 works with Google Cloud partner SADA. “Their guidance and expertise has been critical,” says Fouarge, “and they’ll be helping my counterpart in corporate IT migrate its VMware workloads to GCVE as well.”

A migration with an eye on AI, and a boost for morale and innovation

Fouarge sees these migrations as a gateway to implementing new AI-backed business processes, something Google Cloud will facilitate. He’s especially interested in Gemini because of its large context window — the amount of data an AI model can handle simultaneously while generating new content.

“Our services for multinational clients include translating compliance training materials, such as code-of-conduct documentation, for a workforce that may speak 75 different languages,” Fouarge explains. “Gemini auto-translation will condense projects that took three or four months to days or even hours.”

Also on SAI360’s AI roadmap: AI agents, built with Gemini Enterprise, that can answer natural language queries based on customer data drawn from third-party platforms like Jira, Zendesk, and Salesforce and stored in a new BigQuery knowledgebase. He expects these agents to significantly streamline customer service requests and drastically reduce the time customer success teams need to prepare for quarterly business reviews.

Migrating to Google Cloud has boosted morale considerably, and working with Google has energized the entire organization.

BigQuery and Gemini Enterprise will also reinvigorate SAI360’s data analytics capabilities. “Without an enterprise data platform, we have to resort to emailing spreadsheets and jury-rigged dashboards for cross-departmental data sharing and analysis,” Fouarge acknowledges. He plans to leverage Google Cloud technologies to automate incoming data pipelines for customer-specific feature usage directly from the SAI360 platform into BigQuery, and add a Looker Studio–based user interface.

“Understanding which modules a customer uses, which ones they don’t, and which direction usage is trending will allow us to create data-driven strategies for addressing customer concerns, offering product usage guidance, reducing churn, and identifying upsell and cross-sell opportunities,” he predicts.

Eliminating the complexities involved in maintaining their previous cloud solution has given Fouarge and his team more time to think creatively and innovate.

“We’re brainstorming with other business units and finding new use cases for the Google ecosystem,” Fourage concludes. “The migration to Google Cloud has boosted morale considerably, and working with Google has energized the entire organization.”

SAI360 helps customers manage governance, risk, and compliance with a platform that handles any workflow or strategy. With 5 million users, its customers include one-third of the Fortune 500.
