Building a travel platform for scale and speed

RailYatri connects over 20 million people across 230 cities in India through its two brands, RailYatri for train bookings and IntrCity SmartBus for bus travel. The company operates as an end-to-end platform, serving both B2C and B2B customers. While consumers use the platform to book bus and train tickets, train and bus providers leverage it to track bookings, revenue, and the real-time location of their vehicles.

Following the pandemic, RailYatri saw a surge in demand for safe and affordable travel, and has since experienced 15-20% monthly growth. However, its existing cloud provider struggled to handle this scale, leading to unplanned downtime and disproportionate database costs. RailYatri recognized the need to migrate its data and analytics workloads to a more robust cloud infrastructure to optimize costs, ensure high availability, and gain crucial analytical insights.

Scalability to optimize user experience and revenue

RailYatri now hosts its services, including MySQL and MongoDB, in Compute Engine VMs, establishing a stable and scalable backend that ensures 24/7 availability for ticket booking and other operations. Its tech stack provides real-time information to customers, partners, and internal users alike. For instance, when a customer makes a booking, the data is instantly synced across the platform. This real-time capability allows a bus captain to access an updated manifest on their IntrCity Crew App, enabling them to check tickets and verify passenger identities before boarding, even in the middle of the night.

By migrating to Google Cloud, RailYatri also achieved 60% faster provisioning of new servers and containers compared to its previous cloud solution. This enhanced scalability meaning that even during traffic spikes, customers can reliably book bus or train travel without service disruption.

Building on the Google Cloud migration, RailYatri introduced the Advanced Resource Period feature to facilitate real-time notifications. This innovation allows customers to subscribe to alerts for peak travel periods and receive immediate notifications as soon as bookings become available.

RailYatri adopts a data-driven approach to track feature performance, analyzing various metrics and user behaviors such as user retention, acquisition, and revenue. The team uses BigQuery for comprehensive data analysis and shares these insights with business and product teams through Looker Studio. Through this data analysis, the team observed that the Advanced Resource Period feature successfully increased holiday bookings by 10%, enabling RailYatri to effectively capitalize on high-demand travel periods.

Improving customer service with real-time updates

To further advance its operational efficiency, RailYatri leverages Google Speech APIs, significantly improving customer service and gaining valuable business insights.

Specifically, RailYatri uses Speech-to-Text AI to transcribe customer service calls. This transcription enables the customer service team to analyze call content for keywords, identify common issues, and gauge customer sentiment. For example, by detecting that many bus passengers struggled to locate their boarding points, IntrCity SmartBus was able to implement a direct solution: including an image of the boarding point and Google Maps links on booking tickets to help travelers find the location on time.

Concurrently, RailYatri employs Text-to-Speech AI to convert text-based information about bus statuses into spoken audio. This audio is then delivered to customers over the phone, serving as a crucial customer service application. This allows RailYatri to provide real-time updates and information without requiring a human agent to be on the line for every inquiry.
