About VMware

VMware, a Google Cloud partner, is a leading provider of virtualization solutions that help companies leverage cloud solutions for app modernization, networking, security, and digital workspaces.

By using the Bare Metal Solution, Google Cloud VMware Engine, and Actifio, the organization achieved greater agility and processing power while saving costs.

Google Cloud results

  • Agile environment and test replication with its ERP
  • Higher security and reliability with backup
  • Lower licensing costs

Latency under 2 milliseconds with Bare Metal Solution

For over six decades, the Queiroz Galvão Group has launched projects across Brazil. The company has expanded its horizons by working in several lines of business, including civil construction, real estate development, urban mobility, highway concessions, sanitation, food, cement production, and environmental, marine, and offshore engineering. Today, with over 15,000 employees, the Group operates in Brazil and in other countries in South America, the Caribbean, and Africa.

Technology has a key role in helping the brand consolidate in the most diverse segments. In the food industry, for example, Queiroz Galvão is committed to bringing innovation to processes, enabling more remote operations than ever before. As for agribusiness, the aim is to improve productivity through modernization and the latest technology.

Concerning the environment, the Group seeks to have the required equipment and resources to promote sustainability, with predictive maintenance. In the heavy construction industry, work safety is the number one priority.

In its search for overall innovation, the company was looking for a strategic provider to support the organization in its digital transformation. To that end, the Group chose Google Cloud to build its multi-cloud environment, underscoring its decision to use public cloud tools.

"We’re focused on industry 5.0. After a period of assessment, we were confident Google Cloud would be the best partner to help us reach our goals. The balance was tipped by trust, its technical aspects, and the chance to access corporate assistance to meet our needs."

Better use of tools and connectivity

Initial conversations to drive migration were held in late 2020 and the first half of 2021. By the end of the second half of 2021, migration to Google Cloud had started. The whole process ended around three months later.

"We’ve got a huge, highly diversified environment. That’s what made it hard. We believed the final architecture that had been designed provided the best option in technical terms and, consequently, we felt confident about moving forward," said the Group’s CIO.

Special mention must be made of the Bare Metal Solution for tool usability as it enabled Queiroz Galvão’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system to perform better by connecting the application to the cloud database. Reduced latency and licensing cost savings were some of the solution’s key differentiators.

Google Cloud VMware Engine, for migrating VMware-based applications to Google Cloud, was also a highlight. The company relies on this tool to include servers using legacy, specialist, and other systems.

"I became a Google Cloud VMware Engine advocate. First of all, the solution gave us cost savings: we spend 30% less than expected. It also provided a better workflow. Another highlight was that migration was really fast."

Another favorable aspect was the performance with Actifio, which provides excellent backup for the Google Cloud environment and maintenance of hybrid workloads. The solution benefitted the organization, and the aim now is to maximize use of its features.

Long-term benefits

Currently, around 60% of the company’s environment runs on Google Cloud. The benefits already secured with resources include agile replication of environments and tests with the organization’s ERP, higher security and reliability with backup performed by Actifio, and the opportunity to develop new projects related to industry 5.0.

A relevant metric, made visible by the use of ERP on the cloud, was the latency between the application and the database hosted in the Bare Metal Solution. Today, latency is under two milliseconds, making processing power incredibly fast.

"Google Cloud isn’t just an enabler of new technologies; it also offers us an easy way to use machine learning. Clear differentiators are the speed provided to our traditional IT and server availability. We use resources with peace of mind, supported by a well-run environment."

Marcello Borges, CIO of Queiroz Galvão Group

Now, Queiroz Galvão’s next mission is to develop new projects involving the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence applied to business. With this perspective, the Group continues to rely on Google Cloud as an enabler of the necessary changes in the journey to industry 5.0, especially based on values embracing sustainability and the way of working.
