Expands into major new markets with a SaaS solution

For a seller wanting to join the online retail revolution, technical barriers to e-commerce can mean wasted time and money. By offering downloadable online store software that is simple to use and easy to customize, PrestaShop has become a frontrunner in the market for e-commerce solutions. Beginning just a decade ago as an open source project, it has organically grown one of the largest global e-commerce communities of developers, agencies, and merchants, and now over 270,000 stores use its software to run their shopping carts.

“PrestaShop’s downloadable software is ten years old, and, at the time, there was no need for it to function in a multitenant way. So we began looking at how to offer a hosted version for multiple customers that would be cost efficient.”

Aurélien Pelletier, CTO, PrestaShop

The recent arrival of new competitors has encouraged PrestaShop to launch PrestaShop Ready, in order to stay ahead and expand its client base. PrestaShop Ready is a software as a service (SaaS) version of PrestaShop, which includes everything necessary for someone who wants to successfully launch and run an e-commerce business. To put it together, the PrestaShop team looked for technical infrastructure for hosting the software that could work at scale with minimal maintenance. Google Cloud Platform was the perfect solution, offering ready-to-go managed services.

“PrestaShop’s downloadable software is ten years old, and, at the time, there was no need for it to function in a multitenant way,” says Aurélien Pelletier, CTO at PrestaShop. “So we began looking at how to offer a hosted version for multiple customers that would be cost efficient.”

Building a multitenant data infrastructure

Moving from releasing downloadable software to hosting SaaS solutions means enlisting additional infrastructure. PrestaShop needed to create a multitenant infrastructure so it could host thousands of shops at the same time and did not want to waste months of revenue developing it. In order to be able to host tens of thousands of shops on the platform, PrestaShop needed an orchestration solution for deploying multiple Docker containers. The new version also needed to function as part of a viable business model with an acceptable price-to-performance ratio.

To solve these problems, PrestaShop built its SaaS solution on Google Cloud Platform. By using Google Kubernetes Engine, PrestaShop easily creates and manages new clusters. Managed services on Google Kubernetes Engine, Google Cloud SQL, and Google Cloud Pub/Sub mean PrestaShop can run complex global services with a small Ops team. “Without managed services, I would need more people to run the system and more resources,” says Aurelien. “That can be very costly. Google Cloud Platform does all the heavy lifting and all the technical, low-level stuff,” says Aurélien. “So when you start this kind of a digital transformation project, instead of starting with a technical project, you can start right away with a business project.”

“Setting up the data analysis was really easy. We just push everything into Google BigQuery, and then write the queries we need to transform the raw data into useful information. That’s it. With Google Cloud Platform, you get straight to the interesting part: analysing the data.”

Aurélien Pelletier, CTO, PrestaShop

Analysing multiple merchant data

Launching a SaaS version means PrestaShop now deals directly with merchants, as well as developers and designers. To learn more about these new clients and provide immediate improvements to its service, PrestaShop gathers and analyses usage data. With Google Cloud Platform, PrestaShop easily aggregates this data using Google BigQuery, then analyses it with Google Data Studio to gain actionable insights that improve customer service, all the while following the principles of privacy by design.

“Setting up the data analysis was really easy,” says Aurélien. “We just push everything into Google BigQuery, and then write the queries we need to transform the raw data into useful information. That’s it. With Google Cloud Platform, you get straight to the interesting part: analysing the data.”

A more responsive way of working

By successfully launching a SaaS-based solution on Google Cloud Platform, PrestaShop has opened up an enormous number of potential clients, while constantly improving its offering with strong analytics. As a result, its customers benefit from a service that is more reliable and better tailored to their requirements, lessening the chance of revenue loss due to technical issues.

“To do continuous deployment right, you need a lot of tools, and Google Cloud Platform provides them. We just push a button and we know exactly what we are deploying. That means we have fewer regressions and can be very confident as we move forward.”

Aurélien Pelletier, CTO, PrestaShop

Now, PrestaShop is beginning to use Google Cloud Platform to enable continuous deployment of its services, so upgrades to the software are easy to release with minimal disruption. “With a SaaS offering,” says Aurélien, “we can fix a bug or implement new features in a day or less, thanks to continuous deployment. It’s a much more responsive way of working.”

Aurélien concludes, “To do continuous deployment right, you need a lot of tools, and Google Cloud Platform provides them. We just push a button and we know exactly what we are deploying. That means we have fewer regressions and can be very confident as we move forward.”
