Much has changed in the 30 years since the Miles & More airline loyalty programme first launched. What began as a frequent flyer program with just seven partners has grown into Europe’s leading loyalty programme for people on the move. Almost two hundred partner companies now offer unique travel and lifestyle experiences to more than 36 million registered members worldwide. As the program has grown, so has the importance of Miles & More’s digital offering. 

Customers increasingly expect a seamless experience across all their travel touchpoints, and Miles & More works hard to ensure that its members’ experience of its digital service lives up to the experiences they enjoy through the awards program. This digitization has come at the same time as what Miles & More CIO Dominik Sommer describes as the “Post-Covid effect,” in which the classical business frequent flyer has learned that some meetings can also be held remotely, reducing the need for air travel. As a result, Miles & More has expanded the number of partners in its program to offer members a wider range of experiences and encourage their loyalty, even when they are not flying. With the drive to enhance user experience while expanding partner offerings, Miles & More adopted an API-first approach to streamline partner integration.

As part of the modernization of its site, Miles & More recently transitioned to a headless approach, separating the frontend from the backend of its site to give it more flexibility in the way it displays its content. As a result, the company needed an API gateway to connect its growing number of APIs to the backend of its site, as Sommer explains. “We decided we needed an API gateway to do the authorization process for us and provide authenticated access to our backends. That’s where Apigee API Management came into play, giving us a powerful solution that makes it easy for our partners to connect to our capabilities.”

The efficient way to onboard new partner services

Previously, connecting a new partner service through an API required a significant amount of integration work for Miles & More, commonly requiring several engineers from different parties to ensure the systems were communicating effectively. A single integration would typically take four weeks to complete, making it a costly process that took engineers away from other tasks.

“Apigee is one of the most efficient tools I’ve seen. When you want to connect a new service, it’s a really streamlined process, taking less than an hour to do, meaning we can free up team members to focus on other tasks,” says Sommer. 

The Miles & More team needs minimal support from the Google Cloud team to use Apigee to connect and manage APIs, thanks to its automated controls and developer-friendly functionality. 

“The way Apigee is designed is really transparent and we can customize and configure it to our needs,” says Sommer. “It’s also got a killer feature, the Trace tool, which lets us see exactly what’s happening in real time. That means we don’t need to look up logs or call someone to investigate an issue, we can just see how it’s been configured, spot the mistake, and fix it straight away.”

Giving members new experiences more quickly with fast API integrations

The speed at which Miles & More is now able to integrate with systems of new partners means it can take new experiences to market more quickly than before. For example, the company recently launched a gamified experience to allow members to offset the carbon emissions of their flights. Miles & More was able to connect this partner service to the Miles & More app in less than an hour, enabling its app developers to build its own app more quickly, significantly reducing the time it took for Miles & More to release the experience to its members. 

“Benchmarking Apigee against architectures where Apigee isn’t used, it is clear how much time is saved trying to get the systems to talk to each other,” explains Sommer. “Without Apigee they go through iteration after iteration until the systems connect. However with Apigee, we have the potential to spot the issue immediately and fix it in less than a minute. Being able to connect these tools so quickly is what enables us to have a faster time to market.”

Driving growth with a seamless digital experience for members

As for Miles & More members, they now enjoy a secure, smooth, and reliable digital service complete with access to hundreds of partner experiences. Apigee’s Oauth 2.0 token validation allows them to log in to their account and access their personal information safely and securely. At the same time, Apigee’s scalable infrastructure allows it to handle spikes in traffic, meaning members don’t experience issues logging in or accessing their miles and awards. 

“In the old days, when we did all the rendering on the server side, if we had a spike of users, we might not have enough resources to handle them,” Sommer explains. “Nowadays, I have no trouble sleeping at night because that traffic just flows through Apigee, which has no issue scaling with our demands because it is in Google Cloud.”

Being able to use Apigee to integrate partners more easily has allowed Miles & More to think about how it can further improve its customer experiences by providing a more seamless user journey through the Miles & More ecosystem. For example, by securely exchanging relevant data from consenting customers between Miles & More and its partners, the company can enable customers to use partner services more smoothly, such as booking a hotel or a hire car, without having to repeatedly answer the same questions.

For Sommer, providing customers with expanded offerings while ensuring an easy to use experience will be important in growing the business. “Apigee is the enabler for that growth by facilitating that smooth data exchange without having to undertake lengthy projects with each of our partners,” he explains.

Extending the use of Apigee, expanding the Miles & More ecosystem

As Miles & More continues to expand its partner ecosystem, it plans to train its product teams to use Apigee to onboard new services using APIs. Currently, the product teams are dependent on the API management team to do this, which can result in wait times of a few days before the new services are connected. Training the product teams to use Apigee independently will remove these wait times, and allow Miles & More to scale up its API operations without scaling up the API management team. As a result, Miles & More will be able to connect more partner services, and offer more partner experiences to customers, faster.
