Previously, Inspire Digital’s business metrics were dispersed across multiple dashboards, making data collection and analysis a cumbersome, manual process. To make that process faster and more effective, the company looked to create a comprehensive Business Intelligence (BI) solution, bringing data together in one place for easy analysis.

“We could pull performance metrics from our data sources, but we couldn’t do it in an organized way,” says Julian Paye, BI analyst at Inspire Digital. “It wasn’t easy to get a quick snapshot of the business and generate insights into how we could improve.”

Scalable, accessible, powerful BI tools

Many companies operate with incomplete or unwieldy BI tools that make analytics incomplete or difficult to execute. “It quickly became clear that cloud-based was the way to go for us,” says Julian. “We don’t have a huge environment in terms of number of rows a day, and on-premises would be very expensive and require a developer. We’ve been using G Suite since day one so we looked at BigQuery, did a free trial, and were immediately sure it was the way to go.”

Using BigQuery as a fast, powerful, scalable data storage solution, Inspire Digital chose Google Partner Matillion for ETL processes run on a Compute Engine instance. “We ran a trial with Matillion and it was so intuitive,” says Julian. “I knew what we needed to do but had never done it myself, and the way that Matillion ETL works meant we could suddenly make a large leap forward toward getting to where we needed to be.”

Inspire Digital creates customized reports on Google Data Studio, ready for use across the company by non-specialist teams, as well as analysts. “It’s easy to make changes and move things around on Data Studio,” says Julian. “The reports look good, and people can use the filters to drill down easily into specific data to get the insights they need.”

“Now we can gain insights across multiple systems,” says Greg. “Previously, that had to be done manually by certain people with specific expertise. With BigQuery, Matillion and Google Data Studio, those systems are brought together so that anyone can run an analysis and make decisions off the back of it.”

We don’t run data extracts and processing 24/7, because we don’t need to. That efficiency gives us room to grow organically with the technology, without the burden of up-front costs. For both products, that flexibility has been a huge benefit.”

With the new BI solution, analytics processes that used to take half an hour are now done in less than five minutes, according to Inspire Digital. “We’re at a stage where people are used to the system and building it into their work lives,” says Julian. “As they reach a full understanding of what the reports can do, we’ll be ready to tweak our reports in line with requests and developments.”
