niolabs, a Google Cloud Technology Partner, provides an edge-to-cloud development platform that allows companies to create IoT solutions across a wide array of verticals and applications.
For Deep Sky Vineyard, the flavor of its wines and grapes depends on countless agricultural factors. After a broken irrigation valve flooded a zone at one of its vineyards, Deep Sky Vineyard wanted a better way to track and analyze data from its equipment and farms to optimize the entire grape growing process and gain a greater level of precision over crop management.
Google Cloud results
- Improves product quality and staff productivity with tracking system that monitors crop yields and performance
- Produces 30% labor savings by optimizing farming schedules through analytics
- Creates 50% crop efficiency boost through reduced product loss from rot and other farming issues
- Reduces cost of human error by as much as 75%
Saves 1.6M gallons of water annually over 15 planted acres
Enabling Change
Solutions: IoT
Workload: Asset Tracking, Predictive Maintenance, Remote Monitoring
Google Cloud powers the smart vineyard platform developed by Deep Sky Vineyard and Google Cloud Technology Partner niolabs. Employees use hardware throughout the vineyard's Arizona location to monitor metrics including water flow and soil moisture to help ensure consistent grape yields and quality.
The monitoring, control, and automation solution directly increased energy savings by 15 percent, labor efficiency by 30 percent, and crop efficiency by 50 percent, while improving capital planning and dropping the cost of human error by 75 percent. With Google Cloud technologies and the nio edge intelligence platform, the growers at Deep Sky Vineyard can put their powerful subject matter expertise to work.
Cloud IoT Core connects hardware and sensors across Deep Sky Vineyard operations, helping push configuration updates and manage data for further processing. Cloud IoT Core is also used by niolabs to perform over-the-air updates of devices running in remote locations, increasing control of the land regardless of the operator's location.
BigQuery drives the platform's data warehouse needs and Looker Studio easily visualizes vineyard information for accessible organization-wide analysis, allowing for real-time actions. Google Kubernetes Engine and Cloud Pub/Sub provide additional back-end support and assurance, and Deep Sky Vineyard is exploring further Google Cloud solutions including machine learning to gain further insights that can improve growing yields.
"The beauty of what we have with Google Cloud and nio is perspective. This year, I already know several ways we'll improve our grapes. Without this digital solution from Google and niolabs, we wouldn't have the invaluable insights needed to make these decisions."
