After experiencing scalability and reliability issues with another cloud provider, Catalant moved to Google Cloud Platform, using Google Kubernetes Engine to scale effortlessly to meet demand.

Google Cloud Platform Results

  • Eliminates customer-facing downtime
  • Reclaims 80% of DevOps engineering time for more strategic tasks
  • Delivers twice the capacity at half the cost over previous cloud provider

Zero customer downtime since moving to Google Cloud Platform

Engaging business expertise on a consulting basis has traditionally been a costly endeavor for large enterprises. It can also be inefficient and impersonal, resulting in cookie-cutter deliverables that yield limited business value.

Catalant is helping the world’s leading companies think differently about consulting by connecting them with freelance talent to meet their business needs on demand. The Boston-based startup offers a software-as-a-service platform that enables businesses to easily source business and technology expertise from a pool of more than 45,000 experts. Dubbed a “consulting matchmaker” by Forbes, Catalant has already provided expertise to nearly 25% of the 100 highest grossing companies in the United States.

Catalant also helps companies make the most of their internal talent, connecting employees with freelance experts to form dynamic talent pools. Using the Catalant platform, companies can take a “gig approach” to deploying their own full-time workforces to accelerate business initiatives and streamline operations.

“Once we started using Google Cloud Platform, we were instantly impressed. It’s much easier to take advantage of containers. Compared with our previous cloud services provider, we can get twice the infrastructure for half the cost, and Google Cloud Platform is more reliable and secure.”

Brian Morgan, CTO, Catalant

To meet growing demand and attract new customers, Catalant is constantly improving its software by introducing new features and refining its matching algorithms. Having started on another cloud provider leveraging virtual machines (VMs) automatically configured via deployment tooling, Catalant moved its application to the cloud. However, it ran into problems with scalability and operational complexity, and experienced occasional customer-facing downtime. To mitigate these issues and prepare for worldwide expansion, Catalant moved to Google Cloud Platform, using Google Kubernetes Engine and Google Cloud SQL for fully managed application containerization and database services.

“Once we started using Google Cloud Platform, we were instantly impressed,” says Brian Morgan, CTO of Catalant. “It’s much easier to take advantage of containers. Compared with our previous cloud services provider, we can get twice the infrastructure for half the cost, and Google Cloud Platform is more reliable and secure.”

Faster time to market

With its previous cloud provider, Catalant still had to babysit its cloud infrastructure, requiring most of one full-time employee’s time. It would regularly receive notices that VM instances would soon be unavailable, requiring hands-on maintenance. Occasionally, VMs would go down with no notice at all, causing Tomas Broka, DevOps Engineer at Catalant, to scramble.

“We haven’t had any customer-facing downtime since moving to Google Cloud Platform, and I’m getting back 80% of my time for more strategic tasks.”

Tomas Broka, DevOps Engineer, Catalant

“The self-healing nature of Google Kubernetes Engine makes DevOps so much easier,” he says. “If a VM goes down, it automatically comes back up, and I don’t have to worry. We haven’t had any customer-facing downtime since moving to Google Cloud Platform, and I’m getting back 80% of my time for more strategic tasks.”

That reliability and efficiency is helping Catalant focus on continuous improvement and keep its marketplace available to customers 24/7. Instead of a cross-your-fingers deployment every two weeks, Catalant is deploying new features and updates up to 30 times a day.

“We moved seamlessly to a continuous integration and delivery model using Google Kubernetes Engine, greatly improving our time to market,” says Brian. “Every company should move to Google Kubernetes Engine if they want to be competitive—and they all would if they realized how easy it is to do.”

World-class security, startup budget

Because Catalant connects some of the world’s largest companies with freelancers who may be working with sensitive data and intellectual property, security is critical. To address customers’ concerns and compliance requirements, Catalant offers a shared workspace on Google Cloud Platform for freelancers to provide services in a more secure environment. It can also quickly stand up a replica of its production environment on Google Cloud Platform for audits and compliance testing, helping Catalant demonstrate its commitment to security.

“Google Cloud Platform gives us an amazing security posture that we would never be able to provide on our own,” says Brian. “We can lock down applications, monitor them with Google Stackdriver, segregate data, rotate encryption keys—all the things you have to do to hold any Fortune 100 company’s data.”

“Google Cloud Platform gives us great performance, and our application benefits from the speed of the Google network.”

Scaling to serve the largest customers

Catalant’s service is in high demand. As it expands globally, the company is on track to reach $50 million in annual revenue. With autoscaling in Google Kubernetes Engine, it can quickly and easily scale to serve any size customer and still maintain excellent performance. Sales teams, which comprise nearly half of the Catalant workforce, can confidently close deals and bring on new customers without worrying about capacity or scale.

“Google Cloud Platform gives us great performance, and our application benefits from the speed of the Google network,” says Brian. “Being able to transfer data very quickly from Google Cloud Storage or Google Cloud SQL into our application enables us to rapidly respond to every service request.”

Going forward, Catalant plans to use Google Cloud Identity & Access Management (IAM) to manage authentication for all third-party software, further improving internal efficiency.

“Google Cloud Platform gives us a platform we can rely on,” says Brian. “It’s better for our business and our customers. Some of our retail customers compete with other major cloud providers, and they are much more comfortable with their data being hosted on Google.”
