Connecting over 1M sensors and multiple ecosystems through APIs

Arity knows that, in its current form, transportation is broken. For instance, data from the U.S. Department of Transportation in 2015 shows that there are over 240 million vehicles out there being used only 4% of the time, and we collectively spend 8 billion hours a year in traffic. This broken ecosystem costs Americans collectively $4 trillion* every year, and worse, more than 40,000 people were killed in vehicle accidents in 2017.

Arity entered the market in 2016 initially to provide the insights that can help insurance companies better understand risk and more precisely price insurance. But the company quickly realized it knows a lot about how people move from one place to another and can leverage these insights across the entire transportation ecosystem to make it better for everyone.

Arity was founded to build upon everything Allstate knows about driving behavior and the nuances of how people get from one place to another. This puts the company in an excellent position to shape the future of mobility.

The Arity Platform is built on more than 35 billion miles (and counting) of historical driving data from more than 1 million active telematics connections and eight years of collecting data directly from cars. In addition to a large and unique data set, the company has more than 85 years of insurance data, risk modeling expertise, and a deep understanding of drivers, their claims, and behaviors, courtesy of its connection to Allstate.

"With Apigee, we can offer rich insights and predictive analytics to partners in a way that scales quickly and can be integrated easily into our partners' complex infrastructures."

Brandon Mendoza, Director of Product Management, New Mobility, Arity

"Arity was established to help determine what transportation will look like in the future," says Brandon Mendoza, director of Product Management for the New Mobility division at Arity, which works directly with partners such as ride sharing businesses. "We focus on what's driving change in transportation and what its impact will be—not just on the insurance sector, but across society."

APIs are part of the Arity DNA. With APIs, Arity can quickly expose capabilities it developed for internal use and share its understanding of driving risks with other transportation-related organizations. "APIs are critically important to the Arity business model and to our philosophy of continuous progress," Mendoza says.

Arity chose Apigee Edge as its cloud-based API management platform as well as the Apigee Developer Portal, which enables Arity to showcase the value of its APIs and make them available to partners through its own customized API portal.

Uncorking value through APIs

"Apigee helped us quickly expose the tremendous value we had corked up inside Allstate," says Mendoza. "With Apigee, we can offer rich insights and predictive analytics to partners in a way that scales quickly and can be integrated easily into our partners' complex infrastructures."

"The API analytics we get with Apigee Edge are an important part of our business model. They give us a deeper understanding of how our partners use our APIs, and we can then roll those insights into our product roadmaps."

Brandon Mendoza, Director of Product Management, New Mobility, Arity

"Many of our customers in New Mobility are digital-native companies with baseline expectations that we provide our services in a very easy and fast way, without the need for long setup and lead times," Mendoza says. "With Apigee, we can help ensure that we can support multiple onboarding needs and that the interactions we have with key end users—developers who are creating solutions with our products—are top notch."

Deeper understanding with analytics

Apigee Edge captures the various operational and business data that flows across APIs. Arity leverages Apigee Edge Analytics Services to determine how those APIs are performing. "The API analytics we get with Apigee Edge are an important part of our business model," Mendoza says. "They give us a deeper understanding of how our partners use our APIs, and we can then roll those insights into our product roadmaps."

Essential transformation advice

Going from an internal enterprise unit to a software-as-a-service platform required the Arity team to develop an entirely different mindset. The team had to re-evaluate how decisions were made, the best alignment with product development, and how they approached working with customers.

"With all their experience in digital transformations across different industries and companies, our partners at Apigee shared their insights into what worked and what didn't work for others, which was invaluable," Mendoza says. "The Apigee team helped us determine how to make the most of our APIs for digital transformation, which helped us get going faster. There aren't many people out there with that kind of expertise, and we learned so much from Apigee."

"The Apigee Edge platform gives us the development tools we need to more easily connect to IoT sensors across our own and partner networks—to truly create ecosystems."

Brandon Mendoza, Director of Product Management, New Mobility, Arity

The future and IoT

Much of the work Arity does involves connecting to a broad array of Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, to help understand the changing nature of transportation and expose that value to its partners.

"Initially, it was important for us to understand how people drive, but increasingly, we need to understand how people move," Mendoza says. IoT sensors are essential to achieving that understanding.

"The Apigee Edge platform gives us the development tools we need to more easily connect to IoT sensors across our own and partner networks—to truly create ecosystems," Mendoza says. "We can deliver more value and insights to our partners without having to deal with complicated integration tools. Apigee developers care about IoT. They know the future will be about making sense of the data that IoT devices collect, and their platform is ready for that future."
