Google Cloud scale for your VMware workloads

Scale, run, and modernize your VMware workloads on Google Cloud while maintaining complete operational authority. With VMware solution on Google Cloud, you get full root-level access across ESXi and the entire VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) stack—giving you the ultimate flexibility to tailor an operational model that perfectly satisfies your enterprise security, governance, and performance needs. Seamlessly connect systems of record directly to BigQuery and Gemini platform to enable AI capabilities.

High performance architecture

Deployed on dedicated Compute Engine bare-metal instances (such as z3-highmem-192-highlssd-metal), this architecture is engineered for your most demanding enterprise workloads. Powered by 4th Generation Intel® Xeon® processors (Sapphire Rapids), each node provides:

  • Compute: 96 physical cores (192 vCPUs).
  • Memory and storage: 1.5 TB RAM and 72 TB of high-throughput, all-flash NVMe storage running vSAN Express Storage Architecture (ESA).
  • Networking: 200 Gbps dual-stack networking integrated directly into Google Cloud's Andromeda underlay. Interconnect complex multi-VPC and hybrid topologies through native Andromeda SDN and Network Connectivity Center (NCC).

Native support for both block and file protocols allows existing storage topologies with Google Cloud NetApp Volumes.

Optimize TCO

  • Eliminate over-provisioning: Precisely align your infrastructure with your actual workload footprints by selecting tailored node shapes across diverse hardware families. By eliminating unused capacity and right-sizing your resources, you can effectively optimize total cost of ownership (TCO) across your entire IT estate.
  • Maximize existing investments: Protect and extend the value of your current software assets by applying portable Broadcom VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) subscriptions through Bring Your Own License (BYOL). Concurrently, enhance cost efficiency by taking full advantage of your Google Cloud spend commitments and Flexible Committed Use Discounts (Flex CUDs).

Partner managed offerings

Large network of strategic partners with deep expertise across both Google Cloud services and VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) provide comprehensive professional services and global coverage across all phases of your planning, deployment, migration and day two operations.

Shared responsibility model

A clear demarcation of responsibilities gives you the operational autonomy of an on-premises datacenter along with the scale, network performance, and flexible commitments of Google Cloud.

Google Cloud manages infrastructure foundation

  • Dedicated bare metal provisioning: Deploys dedicated Compute Engine bare-metal nodes seamlessly into your VPC underlay.
  • Facility and hardware operations: Oversees datacenter facilities, power, cooling, cabling, and underlying host health.
  • Automated hardware remediation: Handles physical server failures and node replacements through automated workflows, Cloud Console, or Terraform.

You retain complete stack authority

  • Full SDDC and hypervisor control: Exercise unconstrained root access across ESXi and the VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) stack.
  • Custom lifecycle and compliance: Set your own patching schedules, maintenance windows, and install custom kernel drivers or compliance agents.
  • Workload and density optimization: Manage guest operating systems, backup schedules, and resource tiering to maximize VM density and optimize TCO.

How VMware solution on Google Cloud works?

Google Cloud provisions dedicated Compute Engine bare-metal instances and integrates with your Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) underlay, while your team maintains complete administrative authority over the VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) software stack, security policies, and workload lifecycle.

By utilizing Compute Engine bare-metal instances and leveraging the efficiency of VCF, you can achieve higher VM density. This allows you to better utilize your existing Google Cloud commitments and take advantage of Flex CUDs for modernization flexibility at a lower TCO.

                  FAQs

                  Frequently asked questions

How is this solution different from Google Cloud VMware Engine (GCVE)?

We offer two distinct deployment models depending on your desired level of control:

                  • Google Cloud VMware Engine (Managed): A turnkey, managed service running VCF 5.2 where Google handles hypervisor lifecycle management, automated upgrades, patching, and SLA guarantees—ideal for teams seeking an operational offload.
                  • VMware solution on Google Cloud: Dedicated Compute Engine bare-metal nodes running VCF 9.x where your team retains full root access, controls all SDDC configurations, installs custom compliance/security agents, and dictates patching schedules—ideal for teams with strict sovereignty, customization, or portable BYOL requirements.

We only charge for the Compute Engine bare metal nodes and not for the VMware solution on Google Cloud.

The solution operates under a Bring Your Own License (BYOL) model. Customers utilize portable Broadcom VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) subscription licenses, which can be acquired directly or managed through an authorized Broadcom Partner.

Google Cloud manages the physical data center environment, host power, cabling, and underlying physical server health. If a bare metal host experiences a physical hardware fault, Google Cloud handles host replacement. Node expansion and replacement workflows can be automated using Google Cloud Console, APIs, or Terraform.

Yes. You can allocate your existing Google Cloud spend commitments and utilize Compute Engine Flexible Committed Use Discounts (Flex CUDs) or Resource-based CUDs directly toward bare metal instance shapes.
