Achieved organization-wide data consistency by centralizing definitions for heartbeat metrics like Conversion Rate through LookML
Empowered stakeholders across every team to build charts and explore data without needing SQL knowledge
Reduced time-to-insight by allowing leadership and product teams to perform live data exploration during business meetings
Streamlined operational efficiency through automated Slack reporting, providing a trusted and consistent language for daily product standups
Wego transitioned from fragmented, inconsistent data silos to a unified analytical framework using Google Cloud and Looker. By leveraging Looker's semantic layer, Wego has democratized data access for all departments, from finance to product, while laying the foundation for an AI-driven agentic future in travel analytics.
Before adopting Looker, Wego faced a critical hurdle common to rapidly growing digital enterprises: a pervasive lack of data trust. The company relied on a basic, SQL-based business intelligence tool that required manual coding for every individual visualization. This architecture inadvertently created a wild west of analytics where every analyst wrote their own queries in isolation. This lack of centralized logic led to conflicting numbers across different dashboards, causing significant friction during decision-making processes. Vital company measures of the company, such as Conversion Rate (CVR), suffered from varying definitions depending on which team was reporting the data. For such a data-centric organization, this disconnect meant leadership often lacked a single, reliable version of the truth to guide their strategy.
When their previous BI tool was planned to sunset, Wego's data leadership viewed it as an opportunity to move beyond mere visualization and seek a platform that offered true data governance. The selection process was rigorous, involving numerous sandbox environments, product demos, and deep-dive technical tests. Wego chose Looker specifically for the underlying power of LookML. The objective was to implement a dynamic semantic layer that could provide centralized definitions while remaining light enough to perform live, high-performance queries against BigQuery without the need for additional ETL layers.
The migration was a high-stakes transition for a 100% digital product company, where dashboards are the lifeblood of daily operations. However, with dedicated support from Google Cloud, the transition was so seamless that the data team even won an internal award for the ease of the rollout. By choosing Looker, Wego didn't just select a new tool; they invested in a framework that ensured every department, from Singapore to the Middle East, was finally speaking the same trusted data language.
The core foundation of LookML was the thing that really drew it to me. I like the fact that we could create central definitions, and then every dashboard in the company would just use our one definition and it was always correct.

Today, Looker is woven into the fabric of Wego's strategic multi-cloud infrastructure, with all analytical power concentrated within Google Cloud. This setup allows Wego to utilize BigQuery for its scalable pay-per-use model, where costs are driven by querying value rather than storage. This flexibility ensures that as Wego scales, their infrastructure costs remain aligned with their actual data consumption. Additionally, the team leverages Vertex AI as a seamless endpoint for deploying machine learning models directly to product teams, bridging the gap between data science and user experience.
The most visible impact of this integration is the radical democratization of data across the organization. In the past, deep data exploration was considered a "data team privilege" reserved for those with SQL expertise. Now, Looker Explores have empowered non-technical stakeholders in every department to apply filters, use table calculations, and investigate complex user journeys without writing a single line of code.
For instance, a product manager can independently investigate drop-offs in the booking funnel, while the finance team uses Looker for real-time P&L tracking. In daily standups, teams no longer rely on static screenshots that quickly become outdated; instead, they share live Looker Explore links directly in Slack, fostering a culture of active, real-time investigation. This cultural shift extends to the highest levels of leadership, where even the CEO performs live data filtering during board-level meetings to drive immediate, evidence-based decisions.
Wego's use of Looker also extends into the core of their product development life cycle. The company built a comprehensive in-house A/B testing framework that relies entirely on Looker for visualizing experiment results. This allows product teams to make definitive "go/no-go" decisions on new features based on trusted, centralized data.
Beyond internal optimization, Wego is now transforming data from an operational necessity into a revenue-generating asset. By utilizing Looker's embedding capabilities, Wego is planning to launch dedicated partner portals, which will provide travel partners with unprecedented visibility into their own performance on the Wego platform, and investigating the Conversational Analytics API to create new data experiences with Looker.
"We have a team that automates a lot of manual processes in the company, so we've been building MCP servers to help service that, and looking at how we can incorporate the Conversational Analytics API to surface data on the front end to a user," says Duncan Reid, Wego COO. "The aim there is to create more advanced analytics we can surface for our partners. We can build data solutions for people and save so much time compared to how we used to do it."
As Wego builds out custom agents with the Conversational Analytics API, those agents are designed to hit the Looker layer instead of raw data, and can answer complex business questions with higher accuracy as they are grounded in the company's trusted, predefined logic. This evolution promises a future where data is not just accessible, but conversationally intuitive for every member of the Wego team.
Looker has dramatically increased the efficiency of the data team. We've taken data exploration from a 'data team privilege' to something the whole organization can do hands-on, including the CEO.
