Virgin Voyages partners with Google Cloud to create Project Ruby, providing sailors and crew with personalized, conversational support through AI.

Using AI to bring joy to sailors at scale

Every Virgin Voyages employee prioritizes one key goal: be the reason that someone smiles today. Upon its launch five years ago, the award-winning cruise line set out to build a brand where sailors feel joy at every turn: from dreaming of a vacation, to enjoying attentive hospitality on board, to reminiscing after returning to shore and planning their next voyage.

The key is personal connection. Sailors should feel like they’re treated as a familiar face on a voyage made for them, not impersonally as a reservation number or a booking tier. But as the company scales with more ships and travelers, making sure that everyone receives a thoughtfully personalized travel experience becomes harder.

AI is changing that. Rather than just reacting to what each sailor wants, Virgin Voyages is using AI to analyze interactions and anticipate their needs. Even better, it can do it at scale. Imagine every guest seeing a different, curated list of activities that pique their interests. Or bartenders who know someone’s favorite drink before they order.

"We're not using AI to replace human connections," says Nirmal Saverimuttu, CEO at Virgin Voyages. "It amplifies the warmth of our crew to make guests feel something unforgettable at sea."

Working with Google Cloud and partner 66degrees, the cruise line developed Project Ruby as the shared AI intelligence powering a guest-facing sailor concierge and an internally facing crew assistance tool. Ruby brings together data from across touchpoints to provide an intuitive understanding of who sailors are and what they need. The result is exceptional experiences that bring joy.

At Virgin Voyages, our people are the key to our success. Google Cloud helps us use data and AI to empower our crew to bring joyful experiences to life for our sailors.

Creating unforgettable vacations

Virgin Voyages runs four ships, with 2,700 guests per voyage and 1,300 crew per ship. Every day, that adds up to tens of thousands of human interactions—and that’s only counting people at sea. When adding in operational tasks, digital experiences, pre- and post-cruise communications, that’s millions of touchpoints every day.

Project Ruby brings all of this data together onto Google Cloud, taking advantage of its cohesive AI ecosystem to deliver insights into everything happening across Virgin Voyages. BigQuery unifies all data streams into one location, ingesting data from Salesforce, Seaware reservation systems, websites, onboard sales terminals, and crew tablets. It lets Project Ruby access trillions of data points in real time for up-to-date intelligence, just when people need it. With so much data involved, security and governance are musts. Google Cloud provides built-in capabilities needed to keep customer details secure.

Through Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, Virgin Voyages leverages models that turn that data into predictions and personalization. Gemini Enterprise then surfaces those insights through clear, natural language conversations that are easy for sailors and crew members to interact with.

"Most organizations are drowning in data they can't act on. BigQuery, Agent Platform, and Gemini Enterprise solve the translation problem—from raw signal to readily accessible, decision-ready intelligence," says Saverimuttu.

For guests, their first interaction with Project Ruby comes through Rovey, a virtual crew member that acts as a personalized concierge for Virgin Voyages sailors at home or at sea. When someone first starts planning a dream cruise, Rovey provides a curated list of destinations and excursions that align with their known interests. During the voyage, Rovey continues to provide custom support, such as suggesting a snorkeling excursion on a clear day or booking a spa session if guests would rather relax. With Rovey by their side, sailors can experience moments that resonate and create memories that they’ll take home with them.

Project Ruby and Google Cloud fundamentally shift how we handle service so it’s not just reactive. With AI, we’re anticipating what a sailor needs before they’ve even thought to ask and helping our crew better connect with guests. It’s a compounding benefit for better efficiency and outstanding experiences.

Virgin Voyages Resilient Lady cruise ship on the ocean

Edge-first resilience at sea

Ships run local Ruby agents on Google Distributed Cloud at the edge to ensure resilience for ship-level systems during offline operations while ships are at sea. While Virgin Voyages uses BigQuery to store data for analytics and model training, it uses Firestore for operational profiles and edge sync, plus Cloud Storage for assets. Meanwhile, Pub/Sub and Dataflow pipelines handle data enrichment and data loss prevention (DLP) checks.

"As you can imagine, we don't have a fiber cable running out the back of each ship," says Billy Bohan Chinique, VP, Marketing and Digital Innovation at Virgin Voyages. "With Google Distributed Cloud, even with inconsistent uptime at sea, we still have access to our Agent Platform stack, which means Rovey continues to be conversational and insightful for the entire voyage."

Google Cloud brings technical excellence that supports our growth. But beyond the technology, we found a partner that shares our vision to set a high bar for what responsible, human-centered AI can look like in hospitality.

Creating special moments with the help of AI

Project Ruby also feeds its insights to crew, augmenting their professional experience with the power of AI. The assistance tool helps crew feel more confident by answering questions quickly and tailoring responses to their ship, route, and role. Complicated backend tasks are handled behind the scenes, such as rescheduling or refunding excursions during inclement weather, so that crew can focus on interacting with guests instead of grappling with systems. Servers at a restaurant receive notes about a sailor's birthday, shellfish allergy, or preference for red wine, enabling them to effortlessly provide topnotch services.

Virgin Voyages continues to embed AI across the business to improve productivity, reach more customers at scale, and find new ways to make every sailor feel special. Today, more than 1,500 AI agents built on Gemini support everything from managing group bookings to training crew members to engaging potential sailors.

For instance, Email Ellie is the company's AI communications marketing assistant that writes personalized email campaigns in the Virgin Voyages brand voice. The agent sped up campaign timelines from weeks to days, reduced agency costs by 35%, and contributed to record-breaking sales with a 28% year-over-year increase.

Virgin Voyages uses not only Gemini models' sophisticated reasoning, but also the text-to-video capabilities in Veo and a text-to-image workflow with Imagen to create a test for its "Postcards From Your Future Self" campaign, due to roll out this year. The initiative creates hyper-personalized ads and emails for thousands of sailors, allowing the cruise line to engage guests at scale in a way that would not have been impossible a year ago.

"Our AI foundation supported by Google Cloud can scale easily with us across the Virgin ecosystem. It's an intelligence layer that supports our goals and growth," says Chinique. "Five years from now when we look back at the big changes in the hospitality industry, this is the moment we'll point to."

Virgin Voyages is a cruise line offering adults-only voyages to destinations worldwide, combining modern ships with elevated dining, entertainment, and wellness experiences designed to reinvent the cruise experience.
