Deploys live version of AI triage system in just 10 weeks with integrated Google Cloud ecosystem
Achieves 81% clinical accuracy with LLM solution based on Gemini
Reduces vet consultation times by 8% with effective pet triage
94% customer satisfaction score among pet owners using the system
Vet-AI needed a fast, scalable, and accurate cloud platform to develop an AI-powered triage system for pet care. With Google Cloud, it built a solution that achieves 81% clinical accuracy, helping to make pet care more accessible and affordable for owners.
The veterinary world is under pressure. The rising cost of pet care is creating a barrier for many owners, leaving animals without the vital treatment they need. At the same time, faced with demanding schedules and limited flexibility, many veterinary professionals are unsatisfied with their jobs, with instances of burnout on the rise and almost 70% reporting losing a colleague to suicide.
It was these pressures Vet-AI set out to solve with the launch of its flagship Joii app in 2019. Built on Google Cloud, the app provides pet owners with online consultations from experienced UK registered vets, helping to alleviate pressure on clinics and ensure pets receive the care they deserve. With over 570k registered pets in the UK alone, Vet-AI set out to further relieve the burden on vets by building a clinically validated and safe triage large language model (LLM) based solution for pet care. With this tool, Vet-AI aimed to provide an affordable first step in the pet care journey, accurately guiding pets to the right level of care.
With the market evolving rapidly, Vet-AI needed to launch its triage solution quickly. At the same time, with pets’ health at stake, it was essential to ensure its solution’s accuracy. For these reasons, Vet-AI chose Google Cloud.
With its integrated ecosystem, Google Cloud offered the Vet-AI team everything it needed to build quickly. The team’s familiarity with Google Cloud and its easy-to-use features also meant engineers wouldn’t be distracted by having to learn new systems. Importantly, internal testing revealed that Gemini outperformed other leading models in accuracy. At the same time, the global reach of Google Cloud aligned with Vet-AI's aspirations for international expansion.
“This industry is moving very quickly so we need to make sure we get the right technology in front of the right people fast,” explains Paul Hallett, founder and executive chairman at Vet-AI. “Google Cloud enabled us to build quickly at scale and keep pace with the AI revolution.”

At the heart of Vet-AI’s solution lies an AI-powered triage system that transforms veterinary data — including over 400,000 video consultations and 100,000 labeled images — into real-time insights for pet owners. With Cloud Run, BigQuery, and Pub/Sub, Vet-AI built a fast, scalable pipeline to process and structure this vast dataset. By integrating Google’s text embedding models with Gemini’s generative capabilities, the system instantly retrieves relevant clinical insights and past interactions. This means users can describe their pets’ symptoms in the Joii app and immediately receive accurate information, helping to guide their pet to the appropriate level of care.
With a team of clinicians in the loop, pet owners can depend on the clinical accuracy of the system, while built-in classification models mean they’ll also be alerted if their pet needs immediate in-clinic care. This intelligent system improves the quality of information vets receive, reducing wait times, and cutting in-app consultation times by 8%. It also provides an affordable first step in pet care to ensure more animals receive timely support, leading to a 94% customer satisfaction score.
The Vet-AI team used Genkit with Firebase to rapidly build proofs of concept for its generative AI features. “Google Cloud’s amazing rapid development tools helped us get up and running really fast,” explains Rob Gray, head of engineering at Vet-AI. This, along with the flexibility and seamless integration of Google Cloud tools, enabled Vet-AI’s team of three developers to build a working prototype in just six weeks and launch its first live version to users four weeks later.
“As we moved into production, the fact that all Google Cloud solutions talk to each other made things a million times easier, enabling us to work really quickly,” explains Sam Davies, head of data and business intelligence at Vet-AI. “Having resources that scale up and down as needed also meant we could try out different products without incurring astronomical bills.”

For Vet-AI, accuracy is paramount to ensure its triage system is safe for pets. The company's internal blind tests showed Gemini to be the best-performing model for generating responses that adhered to its store of specific, clinically-relevant data. Those tests showed that Vet-AI's LLM-based triage system, underpinned by Gemini, operates at 81% clinical accuracy, significantly surpassing other leading LLMs.
Just as important is the need to maintain pet owners’ data privacy. Vet-AI uses Gemini to remove all personally identifiable information during the data processing stage, preventing any personal data from being ingested into its retrieval system. Vet-AI hosts its models using Vertex AI endpoints, which, as with all Google Paid Services, never uses customer data to train the underlying Gemini models, ensuring Vet-AI keeps pet owners' information secure and confidential.
The success of Vet-AI’s triage system is underlined by an 8% increase in users converting into a consultation when triaging through the LLM. Vet-AI is now developing a range of AI specialists built on Google Cloud and trained extensively on specific clinical datasets. Starting with a gastro specialist, these will offer specialized, nuanced advice, helping Vet-AI to further differentiate its offering.
Vet-AI has also used Google Cloud to build a cutting-edge visual-analysis capability for skin conditions. This will allow pet owners to upload photos of skin lesions for assessment. A custom skin model, trained using TensorFlow on over 60,000 images, analyzes these photos to identify the type and severity of the condition. Vet-AI uses Vertex AI endpoints to host its models, creating an endpoint where the app can send photos and instantly receive an assessment. “With Vertex AI, we can deploy the model and get an endpoint really quickly, which is very refreshing,” says Gray. This foundational visual technology also extends to video analysis, meaning pet owners are now able to send videos of their pets to the Mobility Checker tool for instant insights such as gait analysis.
For Vet-AI, the priority now is to build on its success in the UK by expanding globally. With the scalability of Google Cloud, and the translation capabilities of Gemini, the company is confident it has the infrastructure to reach a global user base. Meanwhile, the company continues to improve its offering, adding more multimodal capabilities, as well as using Vertex AI Agent Engine Memory Bank to enable longer-term memory for its AI systems. This will allow the Joii app to remember a pet's entire care history, offering continuous and personalized support.
“Google Cloud is what enables us to drive our mission to make pet care accessible and affordable for everyone,” says Hallett. “That mission is the reason Vet-AI exists, and with Google Cloud we can achieve it.”
