Tunghai University: Optimizing digital systems to offer quality education with Google Cloud

Google Cloud Results
  • Provides unlimited storage space in Google Workspace to enable efficient teaching and learning

  • Enables code sharing to support smooth AI and ML experiments

  • Supports autoscaling with Cloud Run to enhance administrative systems’ service quality

  • Facilitates carbon reduction to fulfill sustainability goals

Tunghai University leverages Google Workspace to enhance its staff’s and students’ productivity while using the infrastructure tools of Google Cloud to improve the scalability of its digital administrative systems.

The new way to improve teaching quality

Tunghai University is a renowned university in Central Taiwan. Since its foundation in 1955, the university has been enriching its learning environments to provide quality education that evolves with time. For example, over the past years, its Office of Library and Information Technology has been expanding its smart information services by launching an artificial intelligence (AI) platform cloud to enhance experimental model training speed and building AI, 3D, AR/VR labs.

Tunghai University’s staff and students have long been using G Suite in their daily teaching and learning. When the platform policy changed in 2022, the university needed to upgrade their subscription to Google Workspace for Education to continue using Google Workspace tools with a storage capacity of more than 100TB. To that end, Tunghai University started partnering with Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) to obtain access to unlimited Google Workspace storage space. At the same time, the university wanted to migrate some of its on-premise administrative systems to Google Cloud for the highly scalable infrastructure tools.

Why Google Cloud?

With Google Workspace for Education, Tunghai University’s staff and students can now use a comprehensive suite of collaboration tools including Gmail, Drive, Meet, Docs as much as they need to facilitate teaching and collaboration. On top of that, the professors and students who are in the AI and machine learning (ML) labs are able to share codes through Colab for smoother communication.

“Our staff and students have been using Google accounts for years, with our storage usage 100x more than 100TB, the maximum usage for free. This means that we have been heavily relying on Google Workspace to improve our productivity,” notes Chao-Tung Yang, Office of Library and Information Technology Director at Tunghai University. “Following the upgrade to Google Workspace for Education, we can use all the productivity tools unlimitedly to maintain smooth work process.”

Next, Tunghai University migrated a part of its administrative systems, including the library information system, the course registration system and the course inquiry system, from on-premise environments to Google Cloud. By leveraging tools like Cloud Run, Compute Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine to support containers, microservices and autoscaling, Tunghai University’s IT team has greatly enhanced the reliability of these systems.

Google Cloud not only offers comprehensive collaboration tools and reliable infrastructure, but also supports our Google Cloud cross-disciplinary micro program, which is designed to broaden our students’ skill sets.

Yang points out that when the university’s course registration system was deployed in on-premise servers, it often encountered downtime or glitches due to the low scaling speed during high traffic periods. Following the migration to Google Cloud, the autoscaling feature of the infrastructure tools like Cloud Run has helped improve the reliability of the system. Based on the estimation of Tunghai University’s IT team, Google Cloud is able to handle 20-50x more traffic than its legacy on-premise environment. As a result, the university can effectively optimize the digital services provided to its students. Furthermore, adopting cloud-native solutions has also helped the university reduce more carbon and move further towards its sustainability goals.

“Google Cloud not only offers comprehensive collaboration tools and reliable infrastructure, but also supports our Google Cloud cross-disciplinary micro program, which is designed to broaden our students’ skill sets. With the help of Google Cloud and CHT, we have successfully enhanced the education quality that we offer and now possess greater innovation potential,” says Yang.
