Temporal Technologies: Durable Execution and seamless deployment on Google Cloud Marketplace

Google Cloud Results

Temporal, a scalable and resilient distributed application platform with core business intelligence on Google Cloud, supports customers across all cloud platforms. Google's secure architecture and AI enable Temporal engineers to focus on improving customer offerings.

Temporal delivers mission-critical durability across any environment

Some workloads simply cannot fail. Reliability requires layers of safety nets and redundancy to truly know a process will never skip a beat. Many organizations, from the Fortune 2000 to the most exciting startups, rely on Temporal to ensure their applications remain durable and reliable at scale. Critical infrastructure can fail for any number of reasons. Temporal’s Durable Execution platform helps make sure that when customers hit “buy”, they know their transaction workflow will always complete.

Delivering risk minimization to critical business infrastructure has positive ripple effects beyond keeping transactions moving. Providing robust platforms for building and operating reliable software systems is a safeguard for critical infrastructure and the human lives that rely on the stability of essential services. Temporal takes this responsibility seriously.

Being there to bolster tech systems for every customer means being available everywhere they need to be – every cloud, every platform. But when it comes to knowing it’s always ready to deliver 99.99% service to its customers and meet 15 minute SLAs, Temporal runs its core customer delivery systems on Google Cloud.

“We are keenly interested in uptime,” says Ryan Cox, senior director of infrastructure and security at Temporal.

We’re interested in Google’s ability to deliver extremely reliable services and have SLAs that meet our customer’s expectations. Google is the foundation that lets us focus on delivering great value to our customers wherever they need us to be.

“We’re interested in Google’s ability to deliver extremely reliable services and have SLAs that meet our customer’s expectations. Google is the foundation that lets us focus on delivering great value to our customers wherever they need us to be.”

Temporal saw increasing demand from customers to offer fast, automated access to its architecture. Looking for the ideal option to offer an “all gas, no brakes” delivery system, the company joined Google Cloud Marketplace to make its platform available to all Marketplace users in just a few clicks.

“Across security, reliability, and into the future of AI, Google shows leadership and a comprehensive vision,” says Cox. “It’s the perfect platform for us to drive new strategic cloud investment and deliver for Marketplace customers.”

Proactive intelligence runs on BigQuery Omni

Temporal is fueled by proactive insights that demand smart connectivity to data lakes and warehouses across every platform. To achieve this with the highest reliability possible, it uses BigQuery Omni as its core reporting platform.

Google’s security-first mindset is reflected in its product offerings and many minor security patches are automatically run for us, which takes mundane work off the table and keeps valuable engineering resources focused on advancing our Durable Execution framework.

“Our team uses BigQuery Omni as the query engine that powers all business intelligence reporting” says Cox. “These reports include customer usage metrics, revenue, and changes in account state and features.”

These reports support the daily insights on the health of the business for its executive team and help its go-to-market leads identify opportunities for growth. BigQuery Omni also powers Temporal’s use of Colab notebooks to explore usage behavior and understand how its tools can be adjusted to improve satisfaction and success for its clients.

Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) is another cornerstone in the Temporal Google Cloud infrastructure, providing a low-latency, high-performance platform that accelerates customer workflows and allows for orchestrations that scale up in just seconds.

“We think of GKE as a ‘batteries included’ Kubernetes distribution. Standard cluster configurations might demand we go out and manually manage controllers and components, but GKE handles those problems for us,” says Cox. “It’s allowed our engineers to focus on projects related to delivering a great product rather than the minutia of administering core functionality of a Kubernetes cluster.”

But at the broadest level, Temporal says it’s Google’s security posture that gives its team a tremendous boost in confidence and operating speeds.

“We see security and reliability as two sides of the same coin. A security event can quickly become a reliability event, and the other way around,” says Cox. “Google’s security-first mindset is reflected in its product offerings and many minor security patches are automatically run for us, which takes mundane work off the table and keeps valuable engineering resources focused on advancing our Durable Execution framework.”

For example, Google Cloud's support for Identity Federation accelerated development time for Temporal during a transition phase.

“This allowed us to reach viable milestones quickly without having to completely migrate everything at the same time,” says Cox. “By not having to manage service account keys we also maintained a reduced risk surface.”

Embracing Vertex AI and Gemini in support ticket management

As a platform company, Temporal knows that AI is set to infuse with many business tech solutions as high-value opportunities are identified and deployed. Being ready to support whatever its customers integrate with is part of the company’s current evolution.

“Building AI applications demands the orchestration of diverse, complex systems — from legacy infrastructure to data pipelines and third-party services, all managing unique SLAs, retry policies, and operational quirks,” says Cox. “Without an orchestration platform, teams can end up wasting valuable time and resources on non-differentiated engineering. This is where we see Temporal as a powerful enabler of AI opportunity.

“We see enormous uptake and significant further demand for AI solutions,” Cox adds. “For customers eager to take advantage of Google’s rich AI offerings, we’re confident that running on our Durable Execution framework will be a chocolate and peanut butter thing. One plus one equals three. You’ll do things you didn’t realize were possible.”

Temporal isn’t just leaving AI to its customers, either. It has also developed a custom support ticket summarization system built on Temporal, Vertex AI, and Gemini. This architecture ensures a highly reliable system, with built-in error handling and retries through Temporal, and the scaling power of Google’s tools and services.

“Vertex AI gives us unprecedented visibility into support trends. We now automatically categorize over 80% of tickets with remarkable precision. Summarizing live tickets and organization data also helps us anticipate customer needs and identify new opportunities — all in real time,” says Cox.

Marketplace integration ensures rapid deployment simplicity

Since joining Google Cloud Marketplace in December 2024, Temporal has grown to over 50 customers now deployed on Google Cloud. This has also expanded Temporal’s reach into four Google Cloud regions, with confidence to grow to wherever customer demand needs its Durable Execution frameworks to be deployed.

“We are excited to continue to grow our footprint,” says Cox. “It’s four today, but we know Google has dozens of regions for us to expand into. We always meet customers where they are and this is part of that same promise. If demand arises in India, we will work with Google to get a region set up in India.”

Engineers from Temporal and Google have worked closely on Marketplace implementation, with Temporal finding the Google Cloud team to be highly responsive to its product feature requests not only being acknowledged, but even implemented to support the company’s needs.

“Temporal customers recognize the transformative potential of building on Google and we’re thrilled to give them the opportunity to unlock it,” says Cox. “Through our new partnership with Google for Startups (GC4S), we’re also now jointly focused on enabling the next generation of startups.”

Durable Execution is a missing piece to a puzzle much larger than Temporal. It serves the Google ecosystem and all the emerging AI capabilities on Google Cloud. It’s great to enable bringing it all together into a simple, secure, and reliable package.
