Scaling security: Protecting 4,100 cloud projects from human error
TELUS' expansive global growth, driven by numerous acquisitions, presented significant challenges to its IT and security teams. A core mission was to integrate new teams quickly and ensure they became productive immediately, all while maintaining stringent security protocols to protect confidential customer data. "The most important thing for us is making sure that team members feel that they're part of TELUS as quickly as possible," states Steve Banick, Vice President of Enterprise IT Services. Meanwhile, the Cloud Center of Excellence, led by Principal Architect Ken Duffy, faced the challenge of ensuring pervasive security across a dynamically expanding Google Cloud environment. With a "you build it, you run it" culture, the central security team needed a way to empower individual development teams with visibility and control over their own security posture, moving away from a reactive, centralized model. The sheer scale of cloud assets, spanning over 4,100 projects, meant traditional approaches risked human error and undetected vulnerabilities.

For its global workforce, TELUS adopted Chrome Enterprise Premium, recognizing it as a powerful solution for simplifying desktop and device management while enhancing security for over 20,000 users. "Chrome and Chrome Enterprise help us get team members access to what they need faster, more securely, and more easily," says Banick. This has led to login times for team members using ChromeOS devices being 3–4 times faster than previous technologies, directly translating into faster time-to-productivity for critical roles like contact center agents.
On the cloud front, TELUS chose Security Command Center Enterprise (SCC) as a cornerstone of its Google Cloud security posture. SCC's native integration provided crucial, real-time visibility across TELUS' extensive cloud infrastructure, protecting 50,000+ VMs and 200+ Kubernetes clusters.
"The big thing that Security Command Center offers us is that it watches the entire organization," explains Duffy. The ease of integrating SCC meant that what was once "dozens" of users with security visibility has now expanded to "hundreds," democratizing security ownership and enabling teams to address vulnerabilities proactively across their 4,100+ projects. This shift from reactive, centralized security to an empowered, "secure-by-design" culture is transforming how TELUS manages risk.
Furthermore, TELUS implemented Google SecOps Enterprise Plus to create a powerful synergy with SCC. This combined platform shifts security operations from a reactive to a proactive, threat-hunting model, leveraging Gemini in SecOps and Google Threat Intelligence features. This enables security experts to focus on threat hunting and proactive security by leveraging automation and AI rather than spending time on manual tasks. This ongoing partnership exemplifies how Google Cloud is enabling TELUS to secure its rapid growth and continue delivering innovative communication technologies.
