Teejay delivers fabric innovation to new markets with SAP on Google Cloud

Google Cloud Results
  • Achieves a 99.99% uptime for production workloads with Google Cloud

  • Reduces disaster recovery costs by 80% with Google Cloud

  • Accelerates recovery times (RTO) by 50% with Google Cloud

  • Saves up to 30% in costs using shared Virtual Private Cloud

Teejay modernized its infrastructure, cutting Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and shifting to an Opex financial model for optimized cash flow. Disaster Recovery (DR) costs are now negligible, allowing seamless failover and AI integration.

Finding the right digital fabric to support a global leader

These challenges were too much for a manufacturing business that does not specialize in IT. We need to focus our team on delivering fabric solutions rather than spending time fixing infrastructure. Google Cloud met all our requirements cost-effectively and had a close relationship with SAP.

Operating as a preferred fabric provider for global brands, such as Nike, Uniqlo, and Marks & Spencer, requires speed, efficiency, and quality across every element of Teejay's operations. With more than 3,000 employees across Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, and expansion into Indonesia and Egypt underway, the organization manufactures weft-knitted fabric for clients around the world.

To operate sustainably and scale production capacity for client orders, Teejay operates state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment, while a research division conducts R&D across yarn, fiber, dyes, chemicals, and fabrics to innovate and provide customized solutions for clients.

An SAP enterprise resource planning system operates across every Teejay entity to automate crucial processes and activities, including sales performance management.

However, with its legacy on-premises architecture reaching end of life, the business decided to modernize its application environment, including a move to SAP HANA.

To realize the new system's full potential, Teejay needed to overcome infrastructure limitations, including the extensive cost and resources needed to add new storage, server, and networking capacity to support growth. "These challenges were too much for a manufacturing business that does not specialize in IT," says Suraj Perera, CIO Teejay Group. "We need to focus our team on delivering fabric solutions rather than spending time fixing infrastructure."

To solve the problem, Teejay considered an updated on-premises infrastructure but identified a cloud solution as the best fit for its needs. The business conducted a comprehensive market evaluation based on providers' SAP relationship, cost flexibility, security, resilience, access to proven AI and data technologies, and support for microservices architectures. Ultimately, it identified Google Cloud as the superior option. "Google Cloud met all our requirements cost-effectively and had a close relationship with SAP," says Suraj Perera, CIO Teejay Group.

Stitching together a more secure and cost-effective future

Teejay engaged with Google Cloud Partner NCINGA to migrate its SAP system and other critical workloads to Google Cloud. To help the organization deliver a complex migration that demanded rigorous planning to minimize downtime and disruption, NCINGA provided inputs into an end-to-end cloud migration, an architecture design that prioritized security, availability, and seamless disaster recovery, as well as secure network configuration, project structure, and governance. Teejay now runs key workloads, including SAP Business Suite and SAP HANA, among other business-critical internal applications, with a SAP on Google Cloud integration.

The biggest benefit is the comfort we have knowing that the Google Cloud is looking after back-end infrastructure.

With the business operating 24 hours, seven days a week, a high uptime of SAP and other key applications is integral to smooth operations and a superior customer experience. An interruption of just two hours can compromise important activities such as invoicing and sales. An Active/Active Palo Alto firewall configuration helps deliver 99.99% availability uptime for production workloads, while cloud-based disaster recovery accelerates failover by 50% while reducing costs by 80%.

The firewall configuration combined with Google AI for Security also provides powerful protection against what Suraj Perera, CIO Teejay Group, describes as a "fast evolving threat landscape." "With Google Cloud, we can trust that this is taken care of, rather than having to invest in security tools and ensure upgrades are completed," he explains.

Meanwhile, transitioning from on-premises infrastructure to Google Cloud enables Teejay to execute plans to expand into Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and beyond, without locating data center equipment and IT personnel in each market. This enables the business to control IT headcount and infrastructure expenditure in its expansion phase, while managing its cloud environment from a central console to minimize demands on IT team members.

Not only is Teejay managing potential growth cost-effectively, but infrastructure optimization and the use of shared Virtual Private Cloud have reduced the organization's infrastructure costs by 30%. That's because, in simple terms, the business has moved away from buying its own computer equipment upfront, based on peak workload expectations, and now rents it as a pay-as-you-go service instead.

Considerable productivity benefits complement these financial outcomes, with the organization's IT team able to focus on projects that deliver business value rather than infrastructure maintenance. The function is already examining how to use AI and data to better leverage its human expertise in areas such as colour mixing and fabric texture, and reduce waste across various processes.

"With SAP on Google Cloud, we are well positioned to execute our plans to grow into new markets," concludes Suraj Perera, CIO Teejay Group. "The biggest benefit is the comfort we have knowing that a business of the caliber of Google Cloud is looking after back-end infrastructure, such as storage and networking, while we focus on becoming the preferred fabric provider for brands worldwide."

Teejay was one of the early believers in Google Cloud. Running the business on Google Cloud for 4+ years is a testament to the reliability and cost-effectiveness provided by Google Cloud. At NCINGA, we keep helping optimize the cloud spend and upkeep the reliability & security of the environment. The next phase is to help Teejay monetize the data.
