Subskribe leveraged Looker's embedded platform and LookML to provide accurate, persona-based financial reporting to customers. This "trusted metrics" approach allowed them to automate data delivery, significantly reducing engineering overhead and freeing the team to focus on core product development.

Democratizing data for SaaS

Subskribe, a platform dedicated to adaptive quoting and billing for modern SaaS businesses, faced a critical challenge: efficiently providing diverse, numerical data to a growing customer base. As their platform scaled, the demand for varied reporting increased, threatening to turn the engineering team into a bottleneck of manual queries and ad hoc report generation. The engineering leadership recognized that without a strategic pivot, they would be forced to constantly expand their headcount just to manage the flow of information requests, distracting them from core product innovation.

Subskribe needed a solution that could offload this burden without requiring a massive influx of new resources. When evaluating the landscape, Senior Software Engineer Ugur Aktepe noted that "classical" BI players like Microsoft and Tableau often required dedicated teams to build and maintain the necessary infrastructure. This heavy operational requirement didn't fit Subskribe's agile engineering culture, where speed and efficiency are paramount. Aktepe emphasized that they wanted to avoid a scenario where every new report required a ticket to a specialized data team, which slows down product delivery and frustrates customers.

The team selected Looker because of its unique, code-first approach to data modeling. LookML, Looker's modeling language, "made immediate sense" to the engineers because it treated data logic like software code. Unlike traditional tools that rely on GUI-based transformations, LookML allowed them to describe data relationships in an isolated, version-controlled environment that integrated seamlessly with their existing deployment systems.

Remarkably, despite the system's complexity, Subskribe got Looker up and running in about one month with just two people. This efficiency meant that data schemas could be updated automatically when database changes occurred, and technically inclined product team members could contribute directly to the modeling.

LookML made immediate sense to us. It allows us to describe our data in an isolated way—focusing on what the data looks like and how things relate—without needing to build a dedicated team just to handle reporting.

This democratization of data management ensured the solution was both scalable and maintainable, removing the friction typically associated with enterprise reporting.

Shifting focus to revenue and innovation

Subskribe implemented Looker to power an embedded analytics experience that is strictly persona-based, fundamentally changing how their customers interact with financial data. By integrating Looker directly into their product, they can now deliver tailored data views to different user roles within a customer's organization—ensuring that users only see the metrics relevant to their specific responsibilities. Beyond simply viewing static dashboards, Subskribe utilizes Looker's self-service capabilities to give users the freedom to slice and dice data independently. This capability allows customers to answer their own questions without needing to contact support, creating a more empowering user experience while significantly reducing the operational load on Subskribe's internal teams.

The foundation of this success is the absolute confidence provided by the LookML data model. Aktepe describes this as establishing "trusted metrics" where everyone is "speaking the same language" across the organization. Because the business logic is defined centrally in code rather than scattered across various SQL scripts, Subskribe can offer endless customization options to end-users without the fear of them accessing incorrect or conflicting data. This reliability has drastically reduced the number of support tickets related to data access, effectively removing the engineering team from the critical path of daily reporting and maintenance.

Consequently, the engineering team has successfully shifted its focus from writing manual SQL queries to "revenue-driving activities" and new feature development. Instead of maintaining a backlog of report requests, engineers are now building the core product features that drive business growth. The intuitive nature of LookML has also streamlined the internal onboarding of new developers. Aktepe noted that new team members can quickly understand the data model by reviewing existing code with almost no friction, allowing them to become productive immediately.

Looking ahead, Subskribe plans to leverage Looker to further monetize their data. They are exploring the use of Looker APIs to allow customers to pull trusted data directly into their own systems, expanding the value of the platform beyond the user interface.

The team is enthusiastic about the potential of conversational analytics. They are confident that because their underlying LookML model is robust and accurate, they can eventually allow non-technical users to ask natural language questions and receive trustworthy answers. Aktepe highlighted that attempting this with a direct connection to a database or data warehouse would be risky due to potential misinterpretation of complex financial models. However, layering AI onto the well-structured Looker data model provides the necessary governance to innovate safely, ensuring that as Subskribe evolves, their data remains a strategic asset rather than a liability.

The well defined LookML model gives us the confidence to provide end users with almost endless self service customization. We know the data is correct, which has allowed our engineering team to shift focus from writing queries to building revenue driving product features.
