Regnology, a leader in regulatory reporting, leveraged Google Cloud to optimize infrastructure, achieving a 50% performance increase while significantly reducing costs. This transition has also enabled the company to expand internationally and innovate with generative AI, supporting its global growth ambitions.

Scalability and cost control: The drivers behind Regnology's cloud migration

Faced with rapidly growing regulatory demands and increasing data volumes, Regnology, a global leader in regulatory reporting, struggled with its in-house infrastructure's lack of flexibility. Regnology offers a wide range of SaaS-based services to regulators, tax authorities, and financial institutions worldwide. With a focus on standardization and innovation, Regnology helps clients streamline their operations and stay compliant with evolving regulations.

The company experienced frequent load peaks, necessitating rapid scaling of resources, which their existing system couldn’t handle efficiently without incurring high costs. The need for a solution that could provide both scalability and cost control led Regnology to explore cloud options. “In addition to the fact that our business grows by around 20% a year, forcing us to periodically resize our resources, we are regularly confronted with load peaks when, for example, a customer needs 100 CPUs for eight hours to carry out his reporting. We needed the flexibility to quickly adjust resources to meet customer demands, without driving up our costs. Our existing system didn't offer the necessary flexibility, so we decided to outsource to Google Cloud,” explains Antoine Moreau, CIO at Regnology.

After a thorough comparative study, Regnology selected Google Cloud for its superior scalability, environmental sustainability, and commitment to decarbonization. The decision was driven by Google Cloud’s advanced product suite, including Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), for containerized workloads, BigQuery for scalable data analytics, and Looker Studio for in-depth visualization of regulatory data. Google Cloud’s ability to support digital sobriety and provide detailed ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) metrics, combined with its robust security infrastructure and compliance with international standards, aligned with Regnology’s values and customer expectations. As Moreau explains: “Google Cloud was much further ahead in terms of decarbonisation and transparency of ESG metrics than other suppliers. This is a key factor for us because, of course, we care about our digital environmental footprint, but our customers are also starting to demand detailed reports on their direct ESG-related consumption in order to meet their own obligations, such as those defined by the Pillar 3 regulations."

The use of products like BigQuery and GKE enabled Regnology to effectively manage data growth while maintaining performance, sustainability, and operational efficiency, all crucial for meeting both current and future regulatory demands.

Our existing system didn't offer the necessary flexibility, which is why we decided to outsource our offering to Google Cloud.

Unleashing performance and innovation through Google Cloud and GKE

Regnology transitioned its SaaS platform to Google Cloud, fully containerizing its applications with Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE). This shift enabled precise resource management, leading to a 50% improvement in service performance and optimized infrastructure costs. “This initial move towards containerisation gave us certain advantages in terms of resource management and performance. However, it was the adoption of GKE that really accelerated our transformation. Today, 100% of our outsourced applications are containerised and benefit from the advantages offered by GKE, particularly in terms of automation and orchestration. This evolution is enabling us to adjust our resources with unprecedented precision. The result is twofold: we are considerably optimizing our infrastructure costs, while our customers are seeing performance improvements of up to 50%. GKE has not only improved our infrastructure, it has redefined our approach to operational efficiency,” says Moreau.

Regnology also migrated from proprietary databases to AlloyDB, increasing technological independence and further enhancing performance. “To make this transition, we benefited from direct assistance from Google Cloud architects and database experts, which facilitated the design of the architecture and the migration process,” explains Moreau. “More generally, Google Cloud's support for our outsourcing project was of a very high quality, and essential to the success of the transition to an optimised, high-performance infrastructure.”

The global reach of Google Cloud allowed Regnology to comply with local regulations across different countries, facilitating seamless international expansion. Leveraging Vertex AI, Regnology integrated AI into its offerings with the creation of the Regnology Chatbot. In an era where subjective regulatory guidelines often lead to confusion, the chatbot provides immediate interpretation of new regulations, helping both regulators and those they regulate gain clarity on their obligations within tight timelines. Specifically, the chatbot enables Regnology’s support teams to swiftly analyze user interactions during problem encounters, enhancing customer experience and ensuring compliance with complex regulatory requirements. This innovation marks the beginning of Regnology’s broader AI-driven strategy for future regulatory solutions.

The result is twofold: we are considerably optimizing our infrastructure costs, while our customers are seeing performance improvements of up to 50%. GKE has not only improved our infrastructure, it has redefined our approach to operational efficiency.

Growth accelerated by AI and Google Cloud's Assured Workloads

Given the sensitivity of the financial data processed by Regnology and the strict regulations that vary from country to country, the company has also attached great importance to the geographical presence of its cloud partner, with sites that comply with the local standards in force. “Here again, Google Cloud met our requirements, with a robust security infrastructure, regular audits and rigorous compliance with international standards such as ISO certification,” says Moreau. “The support of teams dedicated to understanding local regulations with Google Cloud enabled us to navigate the various regulatory frameworks efficiently and ensure a fully compliant transition for our customers."

This compliance with local regulations is all the more valuable for the company as Regnology has major ambitions for international development. By relying on Google Cloud, it is no longer hampered in its geographical expansion, both in terms of deploying its solutions in new regions of the world and complying with the regulations specific to each country.

Regnology optimizes infrastructure and embraces generative AI for future-ready regulatory solutions

Leveraging Google Cloud’s generative AI solutions, Regnology already built its Ticket-to-Code Writer tool with Gemini 1.5 Pro to automate the conversion of bug tickets into actionable code, significantly streamlining the software development process.

But with a robust, secure, high-performance and scalable infrastructure capable of supporting its development ambitions, Regnology is far from having completed its transformation. In particular, the company plans to continue optimizing its platform by further reducing the granularity of its microservices to optimize costs and performance. It has also begun to introduce AI into its solutions with the implementation of a chatbot dedicated to regulatory issues, trained on public data from regulatory documents such as those of the European Central Bank. Built with Vertex AI, this first application is just the start of a new era. “Vertex AI offers numerous opportunities for development, particularly in terms of improving the quality of the services we offer our customers and our internal operational efficiency. It's an important step for the future of our industry, and we're looking forward to exploring its full potential," concludes Moreau.
